THE ALASKA CENTRAL RAILWAY is an All American ralircad from Resurrection Bay to Rampart, opening up the richest part of interior Alaska. Along the route are the greatest coal flelds in the world, as well as rich copper, iron and placer flelds, and millions of dollars’ worth of fine timber. The United States Government conducts four agricultural stations on the route, and the country will be largely popu- lated as soon as transportation facilities are provided. The route up the wide valley of the Susitna, across a low divide to the Tanana Basin and over the Manook Hill to Rampart on the Yu- kon Riyer, is stmple and inexpensive. PERMANENT SETTLEMENT ASSURED. The demonstration by agents of the Agricul- tural Department of the Federal Government that profitable agriculture and stockralsing can be carried on In thc Tanana Valley, the Susit- na Valley, and in all that great expanse of country north and south of Cook Inlet, makes it certain that the permanent settlement of the country by hundreds of thousands of farmers and stockgrowers will speedily follow the min- eral development. The earning basis of such a road will thus be assured for all time. THE SURVEYS COMPLETED. The route of the Alaska Central Railway fol- lows a_preliminary survey completed by and under the supervision of C. M. Anderson, civil engineer, of Seattle, In 1899. All the fleld notes, maps and drawings, and every right, title and intercst in that survey, have been ac- quired by the Alaska Central Company. The survey has been adopted and approved Dby the board of directors and flled with the In- terior Department at Washington, D. C., In compliance with the provisions of iaw. This action| guarantees to the company the absolute right to its-route and protects it from infringement by any other company. Nine crews of engineers have been at werk since May, 1902, making the permanent survey of the road and locating terminals. Some of the crews have finished their work, and all will be through by the first of January, 1903. Thelr reports are uniformly of the most flatter- ing character, with respect both to mineral re- sources, agricultural and stock raising, and the absence of engineering difficulties. They speak in the most praiseworthy terms of the climate, all pronouncing it very similar to that of Western Washington. In locating the route, ‘were keot in view: First—A harbor on the southern coast of Alaska, - well sheltered, open the vear around, central’ with respect to Interior Alaska and the outside world, and bordered by land suitable for a terminai city. Second—A tributary country capable of sup- porting a profitable traffic from the start. Third—An easy grade, protected alike from the danger of spring freshets and winter snows. Fourth—A route that may be regarded as a trunk line, from which branches and feeders may be extended as developments justify. Fifth—A terminal on the Yukon River at a point central to the largest possible area of producing country, with easy communication up and down the great navigable streams of’| the interior. the Tanana and the Yukon. ‘After a detafled examination into the advan- tages and disadvantages of all the harbors in Southern Alaska, the directors of the Alaska Central Railway Company unanimously decided upon Resurrection Bay as the only harbor pos- sessing every advantage sought for, and free from all the disadvantages to be avoided. It is the most central harbor of Southern Alaska. It is midway between Cook Inlet and Valdes. It is accessible from the intepior through an extensive and fertlle valley, fempered by the warm influences of the Japan Current. The bay itself is landlocked completely, ex- tends twenty miles inland, and has a uaiform depth of over ten fathoms. The warmth of the Japan current keeps it always free from ice. The land bordering it on the north slopes grad- ually to the interior level plain on Kenal Pe- ninsula, being admirably adapted to the needs of a terminal city. RECAPITULATION. All things considered, the Alaska Central Railway is one of the finest openings for legiti- mate investment ever offered in the railway world. The directors and officers are among the Known and most substantial men In the Statey of Washington and Nebraska. They are men of the strictest Integrity, of wide experlence, and are iIntrusted with prop- erty interests valued In the milllons of dollars. They have organized the Alaska Central Rafl- way Company because conditions demand the building of the road, and the earnings assure large rewards. It (s the honest convictions of the officers and directors that dividends on the preferred stack will be earned from the time the first 2y miles are bullt & e preferred stock should therefore 80 to par, and above. There is no \1!?;‘ relZ son why the Alaska Central should not be a better dividend earner when it enters the Mount McKinley _district, 125 miles Ini than, the White Pass and Yukon is to-day, -1_}_:\:, stock $500 above par. e permanent resources tribut; Alaska ‘Central are 3o far superior gy the we sources tributary to the White Pass and Yukon that comparison is out of the question.
