Special reference will first be to borax and sulphurous and saly- ic acids. Only pure food, however, will given to the subjects for the first two weeks. This will be carefully weighed, together with all drinkables, and the con-, dition of the men observed each day. Our be continued for a year.” you make any experiments with alcohol and tobacco?” “Tobacco is not food, and the provisions of the law under which we are acting only permit us to make tests with food prod- ucts. On the other hand, alcohol is con- sidered a food and we would be at liberty to experiment with it. Another officer of L o o e o S SRR SOOI Y BExcelsior Mill for Wheatland. Calkins of Wyoming, Wis., who writes many interesting s for the “Youths’ Companion,” says:— “Food can make or unmake a Writer. For & number of years, liviug the seden- tary life of the writer and student, I suf- fered all the ills of nervous dyspepsia. I could eat nothing in the morning save a @ry crust of toasted bread and & cup of weak coffee. For my dinner at 6 o’clock, I had been in the habit of eating rare beef steak, the only food from which I seemed to get proper nourishment, but no meal was taken without the after pangs of indigestion; I was beginning to get disgusted with life. “About @ year ago a friend Grape-Nuts, telling me of the benefit he had recelved from the food and I began with it as directed; I found immediate relief from my indigestion and in a short o GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL WHO I8 ENGAGED IN EXPERI- MENTS WITH FOODS. B 3 the Government, ,however, Dr. Atwater, is already at work on alcoholic tests and we shall not make any experiments of this character, at least for the present. “The adulterants will not be adminis- tered in food itself, but will be given to | the subjects immediately before and after eating in such quantities as would nat- urally be put into the amount of food ta- ken when prepared for commerce, We keep a regular account with each man and by chemical analysis can quickly tell what has been digested and what has not.” The object of the tests is to give Con- gress data for the formation of a pure food law and also to ‘determine whether the German Government was justified In barring all American/meats from import- ation if they had been preserved with any of these agents, Browns Valley Mines Sold. MARYSVILLE, Dec. 6.—A group of properties in this county known as the Browns Valley mines, including the fa- mous Pennsylvania, have been sold by F. W. Johnson and T. J. Hibbert to the Standard Consolidated Mining Company of San Francisco. The price was not made public, but was about $100,000. The new company has taken possession and will proceed to develop the properties on a large scale. —_— Burglaries in Sutter County. MARYSVILLE, Dec. 6.—An epidemic of burglaries is prevailing in Sutter County. On Sunday and Monday four burglaries were reported, and last night there were three more. Among the houses entered last night were those of County Clerk D. D. Green and former Sheriff W. P. Har- key. A large number of hoboes are now roaming this section and it is supposed they committed the burglaries. Cruiser Boston Is Delayed. BAN DIEGO, Dec. 6.—The cruiser Bos- ton did not get away to-day, as was ex- pected, because it has been found neces- sary to wait for a casting which was broken on the way down from San Fran- cisco and which s belng recast in the latter city. The crulser will go from here to Magdalena Bay for target practice, re- turhing here on the 23d for the holidays. Bentenced for a Murder. REDDING, Dec. 6.—Benjamin Willlams was sentenced to twenty-five years’ im- prisonment this morning. He killed Charles H. Cummings at Delamar on June b last. The killing was unprovoked, and Willlams escapes hanging because he was crazily intoxicated at the time the deed was committed. He barely escaped lynching when first arrested. AL Carrie Nation Again Arrested. TOPEKA, Kans, Dec..6—Mrs Carre Nation, the saloon smasher, returned to the city yesterday and this morning made a tour of the saloons of the city, prepara- tory to beginning another smashing tour, as she expressed it. The crowd fol- lowing her grew so large that the police arrested Mrs. Nation on a charge of dis- orderly conduct. She was given a lmu.lll fine in the police court this afternoon. Mrs. Natfon announces that she will re- peat her old-time exploits in this city vdme my dyspepsia left me entirely. I have mow used e-Nuts for a year and have had no trouble with my stom- ach, having eaten many enjoyable dinners. “I find in fact that all you say for Grape-Nuts is true and it is certainly the food for brain workers and the truth of your claims is proved in my own cure. 1 have no appetite for meats.” before long. —_— ADVERTISEMENTS. STATE CAPITOL BUILDING LACKS FIRE PROTECTION Sensational Feature of the Sacra- mento County Grand Jury’s Report. SACRAMENTO, Dec. 6.—The Grand Jury, in its final report to-day, directs the county officials to enforce the law against nickel-in-the-slot machines, which are permitted to run throughout the county. The same class of machines for more than a year have been sup- pressed in this city, under authority of the State law against banking and per- centage games. The most sensational feature of the re- port is the declaration that the beautiful State Capitol building is In constant dan- ger of destruction by fire, together with the State Library, containing the second largest collection of books in the United States. The jury points out that it 1s impossible to get a supply of water in the attic or garret, and that all of the elec- tric wires through the building enter by means of this garret instead of the cellar, and present a menace to the safety of the structure. The Capitol Commissioners are urged to take steps immediately to re- move this danger. Tunnel Costs Fifty Dives. CLEVELAND.
