We weld 3 Ly A Statement by Congressman Baer HE following interview was given out by Congressman-elect John M. Baer of North Dakota at the National Nonpartisan league headquarters at St. Paul, on his way to Washington, D. C.: Our country is in the throes of war. In this crisis my constituents are not concerned with questions of patronage and partisan politics. | They are conecerned with the firm establishment of human rights. The vote by which I was elected was greater than the total vote cast for my- | six opponents. I consider this an emphatic indorsement of the National Nonpartisan league platform on which I made my campaign, rather than a personal indorsement. The reason for that indorsement lies in the faet that it proposes the solution of our national difficulties in the right way, the way that makes for the establishment of democracy and diberty at home as well as abroad. Germany holds conquered territory in France, Belgium and the Balkans, equal in area to her own European territory, prior to the war. (Germany can not be allowed to hold these-people in subjection. Germany can not be allowed to make this profit as awresult of the mur- derous assault upon the peace of the world by the imperialists of the European nations. ’ WE HAVE IMPERIALISTS IN THE UNITED STATES England holds conquered German territory in German East and West Africa, Togoland, the Kamerun and Pacific Island colonies, five times the area of the German empire in Europe. To allow either of these nations to profit from the war, either in the imperialistic acqui- sition of this territory or by means of punitive indemnities, will but in- cite to future wars~Imperialism, whether made in Berlin or made in London, is the same-—the curse of the world. In the United States we have imperialists, fattening upon the world’s misery. The food gamblers and speculators are raising the priee of food so that millions go hungry, even though we have ample store of foods that can not be exported. Credit is being extended to our allies by the billion, and that eredit is charged to the people of the United States by way of bonds, while speeulaters charge extor- tionate prices for the supplies in which the loan is paid to our allies. Billions of war profits are made by these dyed-in-the-wool traitors to America and democracy. These same American imperialists are bending every energy to destroy free speech and a free press, to be - able under that cloak; to cover their crimes against patriotism. Rights are being undermined, under the excuse of war—rights that if lost may never be regained. Seeret diplomacy which keeps the peoples in ignorance of the agreements of their governments, is a econtinual men- ace to peaceful relations and should be at once abolished. GOVERNMENT SHOULD TAKE OVER THE TERMINAL ELEVATORS President Wilson says -the German people are a peace loving people. We, also, love peaee; we are in this war for peace, and net for war. The German people are erying aloud for peace without indemni- ties and without annexation of territory. There is a persistent ery for peace by a large section of the English people. Franee is bleeding to death. The new Russian demoeracy has already declared for peace on those terms. There is no denial of these facts. True patriotism com- pels recognition of them. Let us, then, who hold country above profits, | compel the vultures who profit out of war to loosen their strangle hold right with horses. Early plowed land is al- | most like summer fallow. Mention Leader when writing advertirers ’ upon the rights of the people. Let us deelare at once the terms upon which we will make peace, thus encouraging the German people to throw off the Prussian imperialism that helds them in thrall. Let us demand of our allies that they deelare their terms of peace with us, and if they refuse, we know that it is net peace but gain for which they fight; and'let us then refuse to sacrifice the young, the strong, the eapable men of this nation for gain of the imperialists of Europe. Our government should at once take over, operate and control during the war, all the great terminal elevators and mills, steel mills, packing houses, refrigerator car lines, arms and munitien faetories, | shipyards and railways. This will be the most efficient manner of | stopping the wanton, wilful robbery under the excuse of war by the imperialists of our own country—the only real enemies of freedom. No pecple on earth are more loyal to their country or flag than the people of North Dakota. We are determined that the loyal patriots who go to lay down their Uves in the trenches will not be robbed of - freedom and demoeracy at home, while they are gone, and that the survivors will not come home with maimed and broken bedies to carry the money cost of this war. Wealth must and will pax the money cost of this war, or we will know the reason why. Our flag stands for equality, for liberty, for justice, and none but a coward or traitor to our flag and our country will hesitate to enter into this fight for the fundamental principles for which our flag and country stand, and for the establishment of which our forefathers fought and died.
