Chicago’s Most Dangerous Gunman ‘Adds Two More And Makes Getaway In Shooungs to List Stolen Car “Wee Willic". Doody Wounds Restaurateur, Who May Die—“Surrenders” to Pursuing Policeman and Then Shoots Him. Chicaga, June 21 UP—“Wee Wil- ran out and called to Police Ser- lis” Doody, cop hater and desperado, treading a trail parallelling the road | Falk passed the car within a mile. the dashing, quick-firing “Terrible Tommy" O'Connor trod, had two more shootings to answer for today. They call him “Wee Willie” be- | cause of his stature; they call him “Baby Face” clear complexion and the innocence of his expression. But the police and federal authoritiés see behind the child mask Chicago’s most ruthless | killer, most brutal gunman, and an incorrigible foe of men in police uni- form. Already hunted for the wounding of T. L. Jackson, ace of Chicago postal inspectors, for the killing of | Charles Levy, chief of police of | Berwyn, and for the shooting dead | last Tuesday night of Leon Ray- mond, an Oak Park druggist, Doody today was sought for the shooting and serious wounding of a res- taurant owner and a policeman. ‘Wounds Restauranteur The latest outlawry attributed to “Baby Face" started.last night when a gunman supposedly intending rob- bery entered the restaurant of Mil- ton Valsouopolis on the south side. As Valsouopolis approached him, the desperado whipped out two pis- tols and fired. Valsouopolis wound- ed, stumbled forward and grappled with his assailant, as a customer seized him from the back. When the customer went out to seck a police- free and fled, pausing in the door- way to fire several more shots at Valsouopolis. The latter may die, doctors said. Reaching the street, the gunman jumped into an automobile stopped | by traffic lights, forced the driver to get out, and sped away. Holds Up Drug Store An hour later a man answering | Doody's description entered the drug store of George Denbo on the north- e and stole $35. When Denbo tried to parley with the man, the latter replied, “No back talk. T just shot up a joint on the south side and I'm in a hurry. T've killed a couple like you and don't| want to knock off any more.” As the robber sped away, Denbo because of his soft, geant Clarence Falk, who was with his motorcycle across the street. “I surrender,” the fugitive an- nounced, stepping out of the car at Falk's command. | As the policeman fumbled with his Holster, the gunman whipped out a pistol, struck Falk over the left ear | with its butt and fired two shots. |one of which struck Falk in thc back. | The car later was found abandon- ed. | Several picked squads of police, and a special squad of federal agents have been assigned exclusively to search for Doo GRAND JURY WILL HEAR SNOOK STORY (Continued from First Page) |ing a violent quarrel in his auto- mobile parked at a lonmely rifle |range near here on the night of June 13, and thit, realizing her relieve her suffering.” The quarrel, he said, followed [the girl's protests against his plan with his family and her threat to kill his wife and two-year daughter if he went. As the alter- |cation became more bitter, the con- fession said, Miss Hix reached for her handbag in which at times she |carricd a small pistol that Dr. Snook had given her. Then follow- ed the struggle in which Dr. Snook sald he snatched up the hammer ‘m the car and struck her on the | head. The gun, he said, was not in the purse. The confession was made carly y esterday afternoon, but Prosecutor | Chester, following an agreement he said he made with Snook, did not |give it his official announcement | until midnight. This, he explained was to permit 8nook to arrange in | his mind the facts for an interview at midnight with press representa- tives. Statements Conflicted ment of the confession ended a day of cross statements from investiga- tors. W. G. Shellenbarger, thief of | detectives, announced early in the day that 8nook had contessed after a grilling of more than 16 hours ending at 6:30 a. m. Chester came in promptly with a denial und throughout the day the conflicting statements stood. Later Chester said that the actua! confession had been made about 1 o'clock in the afternoon, and Shell- enbarger, amplifying his announce- ment said that he based his state- ment on an admission from Snook that he had taken a key from the girl’s keyring when the murder was committed. The admission regard- ing the key closed the questioning | for the time and Shellenbarger sald he considered the fact as a confes- sion of guilt. Chester, however, in- | The prosecutor’s tardy announce- | sisted that the confession should be point blank and specific, and this was obtained after Snook, given aa hour's respite was hauled back into the inquisitorial room at the police station and again put under the barrage of questions. Two Points Forced Statement Two salient points precipitated the confession—one the wringing from Snook of the admission that he had taken the key to their room | from the girl's keyring at the scene | of the murder and the other coming just at the peak of the questions about the key, a report from Dr. C. E.
