DOROTHY RAYMER, vu Page 4 ~~" PERSONALS — NEWS OF INTEREST TO WOMEN ITEMS OF INTEREST TO EVERYONE Wrcey saver THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Wednesday, December 24, 1952/ the pockets to match the stars SHOP HOPPING 2&6, JAXON Well, folks, it’s the night before Christmas, and I’ll bet there are a lot of folks heaving a lot of sighs . . . even as you and I. It’s been loads of fun though; weren't, it would become only a religious holiday, instead of . a festival for kids, big and little. We hope yours will be a wonder- ful Christmas and that your New Year will be filled with health, happiness and good fortune. KER a Whenever a party is born . you always find you need a doz- en or more things. Well, the Dit- ty Box can sure help you out on a@ number of these. F’r instance, the bamboo highball glasses 1 saw there yesterday. Not 1 bamboo, but plastic, and | da’ you to tell the difference. The set. has a beautiful ice bucket with tongs to go with it, too. Then one of those wonderful bamboo trays | was telling you about, real this time, with a rim, handles and woven mat bottom. In four sizes, you bet. Then don’t forget the beautiful straw baskets to hold the party good- jes, the huge hors d’oeuvres platters, the coconut dishes more things than | could name. Tomorrow's Christmas day, and it’s still not too late, but then there‘’s always Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and: the holiday parties go on and on. But tonight's the night befo: Christmas, and all the heathen idols and lovely polished things from the Orient glisten and gleam like the gifts of the Ma: and the Ditty Box wishes you Merry, Merry Christmas. xk * From the Book that holds the most beautiful words ever written: “Behold, I bring you good tiding of great joy which shall be to all peo- ple. For unto you is born this day in the City of Saviour which is Christ, 4 Se David a the Lord. “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly | hosts praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace good will to- ward men.’” — The Gospel of Saint Luke. oR The folks at Mar-Ed are glut- tons for punishment, Christmas isn’t quite here, and they are moving! On the 27th... only two days after Christmas, Mar- Ed is leaving the old location on Fleming Street for the new — to that wonderful new building on Duval Street right across from La Concha. Which brings us to the big news ... who wants to carry all those clothes over? Not they! So tate matters, you can go to the old Mar-Ed on the 26th, that’s day after tomorrow, and you'll find all those wonder- ful new formals and party dresses reduced twenty per cent. May your Christmas be jolly as a snowman, sweet as a candy cane, and a joy to you and your loved ones. if it) There‘s the answer to your gala | gown problems. ; i, peed This column’s con- gratulations to Mar-Ed; we think it’s. going to be a big improvement, and also a very Merry Christmas, girls. Rest fast all day the 25th, be- cause there'll be no reg for the next days after! We also would like to write one of our favorite verses here, by the children’s poet, Longfellow: “I heard the bells on Christmas day The old familiar carols play. And brings us right in- to the office of Dr. Valdes on Duval Street where we will be talking to that smart little career woman, Mrs, Gladys Barber, who is the gal, with the know- how when it comes to helping you select the right frames for your glasses. Try varied types of frames be- fore you make your selection. You can match the colors of the frames either to your hair or Some women like to match eyes, especially if they're green or blue. But what am I telling you all this for? | guess it’s just that Mrs. Barber has me quite enthused on the subject. Go and see her when you get your next glasses, and you'll feel exactly the same. kk * Legend has it - that! Saint Winfrid originated the Christmas tree in’ Germany in 16042 He gathered a group of con- verts about him in the) forest and hewed down a giant oak which as Druids they had worshipped. It crashed to the ground, splitting into many pieces, Behind it stood a young fir. Said Winfrid: “This little tree, a young child of the forest, shall be your holy tree tonight. It is the wood of peace, for your houses are built of fir. It is the sign of end- less life, for its leaves are ever green. See how it points upward to heaven! Let this be called the tree of the Christ Child; gather about it, not in the wild-wood, but in your homes; there it will shelter no deeds of blood, but loving gifts, and rites of kindness.” Rak Ve that looks just like Eve at Chic is a beautiful sheath of black velvet in your eyes. Then there are so many other pretty party frocks of nylon and lace and satin. 1 don’t know about you, but the one dress | got wasn’t enough for the holidays, and right after Christmas will find me shopping for another. OF course, the other new clothes at Chic are gala, and just right for the little parti Chic, Uptown, is such a nice and the parking problem is nil, so look around! The people at Donald’s From Flora to Sue, Donald and Ann, Aiso Ruthie and Lou— ¢ All join in saying, Merry Christmas to you.” * It x * seemed I sent such scads of Christ- mas cards, but of course I couldn’t reach all of you, my very good friends. So via the old column, I'd like to send greetings, the same as composed by good old Fra Giovanni in 1513, but straight from my heart. I salute you! There is nothing T can give you which you have not, but there is much that, while I cannot give you, you can take... No Heaven can come to us un- less our hearts find rest in it to- day. Take Heaven... No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in the present. Take Peace... The gloom of the world is but a shadow, behind it, yet within our reach, is joy. Take Joy... And so at this Christmas time, I greet you, with the prayer that for you, now and forever, the day breaks and the shadows flee away. with stars at the neck and on Jaxon.—(Advt.) ‘Children Are Thrilled With Gifts Received At VFW Christmas Party ° Last Sunday afternoon the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3911,|On Christmas Day went all out for the Christmas season with two separate parties for children. Before the party for their own children, they played} Fleet Sonar School and the Navy Santa for 15 cerebral palsied children brought by the Monroe County Cerebral Palsy and Cripples Association. For each group there were movies (cartoons, of course), ice cream and cake and a sack of fruit and candy. Gifts for the VFW children were provided by the Post, while each crippled child re- ceived the gift for which he had asked and which was donated by various merchants of Key West. One of the most thrilling gifts ever received went to a seven- year-old crippled boy, who really needs it for exercise. That was a Tesaco Fire Chief truck, which Mr. Harold Casterton found aban- doned in a house to which he moved a few weeks ago. Mr. Cas- terton turned the toy over to the local fire station men, who repair- ‘ed and painted it, equipped it with a handmade ladder, and lettered it “Key West Fire Department.” VFW members who had charge of the parties were: Cmdr. Lacy Lee, general chairman; Mrs. Mary Cruz, Mrs. Mary Lee, and Mr. Grady Wood, committee on gifts and refreshments; Mrs. Edna Per- nick, Junior Vice President of the Auxiliary; and Mrs. Vanessa Saun- ders, President of the Auxiliary. Gifts were distributed by Santa gorgeously decorated tree.
