A joyous Christmas and a bouatifal New Year to «!l! Sweeting’s Auto Service OPP, CITY HALL DIAL 2.3733 BETHLEHEM (#—The guarded border between Jordan and Israel opens one day on Christmas Eve in honor of the Prince of Peace. The Arab state of Jordan and the Jewish state of Israel techni- cally are still at war. Free passage from one zone to another in this city occupied half by Israeli’ and half by Jordan forces is an im- possibility all the year round. But on Christmas Eve every year the soldiers of the Arab Legion, wearing their colorful head dresses, and the stiff guards of Israel, whose caps carry the Star of David, step aside at one crossing point. They stand at attention as a crowd of several hundred, headed by Msgr. Alberto Gori, the Latin patriarch in Jerusalem, solemnly walks to St. Catherine’s Church in Oace more we pause to welcome to our hearts the spirit of this blessed season. May it renew the great warmth of reverent love in the hearts of all men, and may this Christmas Day herald the fulfillment of all our prayers for joy and peace to all our brothers throughout the world. SAN CRERL°C THEATRE Citizen Staff Photo SCULPTURED DRAMA is produced by spraying silver paint on three reindeer of graduated size and on the round sea-grape leaves used by Mrs. William R. Warren, vice president of the Key West Garden Club for her Christmas centerpiece. The candles are also lacquered in silver and silver is flecked on the base made of white block foam. It is distinguished and yet simple work and adapts itself to formal dinner tables or the mantel above a hearth with consummate dignity. A pine cone and a silvered tilted bell are extra points of interest. Truce At Israel-Arab Border Will Honor Prince Of Peace Bethlehem to celebrate the Nativ- ity. They come from all over the world to attend the midnight mass in Bethlehem. Rifle fire of the Arab-Israeli war still echoed on Christmas, 1948, when the first pil- grims from abroad were permitted to cross the demarcation line. Since then they have come in increasing numbers. This year thousands are expect- ed. Some travel through Amman, the Jordanian capital. Others from overseas fly to the Israeli airport of Lydda. From there they motor to Jerusalem. In the years before the war ipped the Holy Land, the procession started from Jerusalem to Bethle- hem. It was met midway by an- other procession coming from Beth- lehem. Now both processions walk to the small village of Bet Jala, near Bethlehem. From there they proceed to St. Catherine’s in Beth- lehem. En route the procession is es- corted by Arab Legionnaires riding motorcycles and horses. The church where the patriarch May the happiness of you ond your lowed ones e sings the Christmas midnight mass is packed beyond capacity every Christmas. There are a few re- served seats for the foreign consuls residing in Jerusalem and the sen- ior members of the Arab govern- ment in the Holy City. The pontifical mass starts at 11 p.m. Dec. 24. While it is sung the child Jesus is carried in a long procession from St. Catherine’s Church to the cave of the Nativity. There the mass is cohtinued and ends around 2 a.m. on Christmas Day.
