The large tender, moored at pier Baker at the Naval Station, gleams each night in the Yuletitle spirit. A large lighted cross shines 3| forth from the foremast, Santa Claus pauses on number one stack ready to descent into the in- terior of the ship and colored lights glow radiantly on trees set around the upper decks. In keeping with the holiday mood Captain Philip W. Garnett, commanding officer of the Bush- nell, has arranged for the men to have extra liberty during the season. Many of the crew have left the ship on leave to be with their families in cities, towns, and villages throughout the United States. For those remaining, shore leave will start at noon one day, continue through the next day and evening with the men reporting back to his ship the following morning. Yes, Christmas has come to the Bushnell andthe men aboard join with the rest of Ametica who pray for “Peace on earth, good ill toward men.” 400 FOOT CHRISTMAS GREETING UNVEILED LOS ANGELES # — The 1,400 employees of the Prudential insur- ange Company’s Western home fice have unveiled what they be- lieve is the nation's largest Christ- mas greeting, 400 feet long and nine stories high. Covering 672 big windows and virtually the whole north side of the building, it consists of a series of 47 colored illustrations which tell the “‘Babes in Toyland” story. Meany Faces Reality In AFL Views - By JAMES MARLOW WASHINGTON ® —. George Meany, president of the Ameri- can Federation of Labor, was simp- ly facing up to reality when he said his organization is ready to settle for less than repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act. Neither Meany nor any other leader of organized labor is in pos- ition to insist on wiping out T-H, which was passed over President Truman’s veto in 1947 when the Republicans last controlled Con- gress. Union leaders now, with the Re- publicans once again in control, nave to settle for the best they can get, which won't be any more than some changes in T-H. They'll have to concentrate on getting the changes they want. They had given their support in the last election to the Democrats, who had promised repeal of T-H. But the Democrats had promised the same thing in 1948 and couldn't deliver. ¥ And, if they had won this time, they probably could not have de- livered either. In recent years, no matter who controlled Congress, organized labor simply did not have enough support among the legislators to kill T-H. In their 1952 campaign the Re- Publicans didn’t promise repeal. They talked only of making chang- es. Meany expressed confidence that organized labor, through the Republicans, could “get the kind of law we want” by amending T-H. And that’s the most organized labor can expect to see done to the law which was sponsored by Sen. Taft, Ohio Republican, when he was chairman of the Senate Labor Committee in 1947-48. Judging from the voting records of the labor committee members— all the Democrats and some of the Republicans—it’s unlikely any T-H changes would be approved by the Far omg unpleasing to organized r. It’s the job of the labor comy mittee to consider proposed chang- es in T-H and then approve only those it wants. This is not final. The House Labor Committee will make a similar study, and the: the full Senate and House offer any amendments they, want before final voie. * So the kind of changes blessed ba pe two — committees could ones pi ow] on the floor by members less friendly to organ- ized labor than some of the com- mittee members. MARATHON NEWS NOTES By THELMA PARKHURST Our Fire Chief R. O. BuShea proudly announced this morning that we are going to have a new fire truck. No one in Marathon fails to recognize how hard Ray BuShea has worked on this. Since last June, Ray has accomplished miracles. We have a new fire 2 house built mostly by Ray (who is a builder by trade). Ray wishes to thank all the local people who donated some time and labor. The building is a modern up to date one and everything is in working order. Although we now have an old fire truck, Ray and the volunteer members are really on the ball, as I told about in last Saturday's paper. As Ray said this morning, it will be 5 months we get the new one, but we are extremely happy that the County Commission Even though Little Rachel Cran- dell’s birthday is too close to Christmas~-Dec. 22, on her 6th birthday this year, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.
