Page 10 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Wednesday, December 24, 1952 Breaks Rule Of Avoiding Interviewing Child Actors By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD (® — Long ago I made a rule to avoid interviewing child actors if at all possible. It’s not that I’m anti-children; heaven forbid. It’s just that my early bouts with child stars were unrewarding experiences, to say the least. However, I broke the rule to have lunch with George (Foghorn) Winslow. George is 6. He has a voice that resembles Tallulah Bankhead’s, with a cold. He also has a sharp inquisitive face and a knack for saying amazing things. This knack was discovered a year or-so ago by Art Linkletter on one pf his kid interviews on the air. This appearance led to a big role in “Room for One More” and a contract at 20th Century- Fox. He has since appeared in “Monkey Business,” ‘My Pal Gus” and currently, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” Tt was lunch hour at the studio, but George was finishing his school work for the day. So I waited out- side the schoolhouse with his fa- ther, Karl Wentzlaff. who runs an engineering and designing firm. “I'm subbing for’ my wife to- day,” he explained. “She usually stays with George at the studio. But she has to have a day off now and then or she can’t take it. Watching after George can be pret- ty strenuous, you know.” I asked how he kept George’s fame from going to his head. “By reasoning with him,” he re- plied. “We tell him that certain people possess certain talents, but that doesn’t make them any better than other people. So far we have succeeded. One day a playmate asked him how much money he was making at the studio. George replied that he didn’t want to know, ‘because it might make me conceited.’ ”” School was out and George emerged from the classroom with a molded piece of clay. “‘What is it?” I inquired. “A flying eggbeater,” he replied scornfully, as though I should have known. Then he took off, as if propelled by the gadget. He ran all the way to the commissary. Ah, youth! At the table, George was less interested in the questions that were asked him than in his egg- beater and a submarine he was modeling. “What do you want for Christ- mas?” “Jane Russell.” “Do you like to work at the studio?” “No.” “What would you rather be do- ing?” “Playing.” “Do you like school?” “Not particularly.” “What do you like to study best?” “Recess.” Because George wasn’t paying much attention to his cheeseburg- er, his father took the clay models away from him. NICHOLAS” Twas the night before Christmas when ali through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestied ail snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads, And Mamma in her ‘kerchief and | in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap. When out gn the lawn there arose such a@ clatter, | sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window ! flew | flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-falien snow, Gave a luster of midday to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, ture sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer; old driver, so lively and quick, tknew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistied and shouted, and called them by name: “Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer! and Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donrer and Blitzen! Te the top of the porch, to the top of the wa!!! New, dash away, dasn away, dash away all! As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstac'e, mount te the sky, So up to the heuse-top the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas, too. And then in a twinkling, | heard on the roof ‘CHRISTMAS AT OUR ‘unigenateeeeas The Prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As | drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney Nicholes came with @ bound. He was dressed al in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddier just opening his pack, His eyes how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like # cherry, His droll litte mouth was drawn up like » bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow. The stump ef @ pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like # wreath, He had « broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like 2 bow! full of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, nd | laughed when | saw him, in spite of myself, A wink of his eye, and a twist of his head, Seon gave me to know | had nothing to dread; He spoke net # word but went straight te work, And filled ali the stockings, then turned with « jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving # nod up the chimney he rose. He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of « thistle. But | heard him exclaim ere he drove ovt of sight, “HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD NICHT.” COMPLIMENTS DICK’S TIRE SERVICE U.S. Royal Tires 929 TRUMAN AVE.
