Work Among Young Mountain Folk by College Is Cited President of Brevard Addresses Banquet of Washington Supporters Attempts to develop a useful, co- operative and simple way of living through education in the Southern Appalachian highlands were related to aboat 100 members and friends of the Business Women'’s Council by Dr. Eugene J. Coltrane, presi~ dent of Brevard College, last night at the 21st annual banquet of the council's Home Missionary Commit- tee in the Covenant-First Presby- terial Church. Brevard’s student body, composed largely of young men and women coming from mountain families, embraces all - denominations, al- though it is a Methodist institutiop, Dr. Coltrane pointed out. “We are,” he added, “simply a ‘student self- help’ unit with programs which cover the cultural, wholesome side of life, and attempt to teach, among many other things, a successful, happy mar- riage, religious development for all, an economic, happy life, and a back- ground for youth’s 'approach to the world. WEe are the first in our sec- tion to teach a successful marriage for youth.” The main problem of the institu- tion, the speaker said, is to combat the undesirable life introduced to the mountain people by tourists. He estimated that 30 per cent of the graduates continue to study in a senior university. “The remain- ing 70 per cent are well enough trained to seek a living of their own,” he said. Prof. Coltrane spoke at -the an- nual banquet six years ago and since that the time the council has sent monthly contributions. One of its members is an instructor there. A musical program under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Stillwell ‘Willlamson was presented. Dr. John Carruthers and Miss Ruth Boyerf, president of the coun- cil, spoke briefly. Miss Elizabeth R. Groves was chairman of the Banquet Committee.
