Nature’s Children Little Spotted Skunk (Spilogale putorius) By LILLIAN COX ATHEY. Bpots instead of stripes on the coet are about the only difference you will find in this skunk from its striped cousin. They maintain the same attitude of indifference and walk with the same air of unconcern. The spotted skunk is a wide ranger over the United States, but is more abundant in the West than in the East, where his cousin * holds first place. This animal is beautifully marked with spots alternating with stripes. For some reason the furriers dye . the lovely fur a uniform black and % many are wearing spotted skunk, though they do not dream they are doing so. The earliest date of record seems to be 1636 in which the skunk is mentioned by a writer who had evidently had an encounter with one somewhere in Canada, and spoke of the animals as “The chil- dren of the devil” The big skunk is an American product. He loves open fields mixed with dense cover, rolling land and woods that pos- sess sunny glades, and farm lands where food may be had and shelter, * too. = Skunks are not wide rangers. i“They are usually wise in their - gelection of e=tritory. But even should they find it necessary to : travel some distance from home “for food, they know they will be glven the courtesy of the road. Skunk fur is a rich deep black growing on a skin that is strong and very durable when proper! dressed, and it is in great demand. Indians and trappers are always high in their praises of the delicacy of the flesh, which is white and tender. The skunk is no climber of trees, but he can use wire mesh on which to scramble up or down with sur- prising speed. He is not eager to take a bath or swim, but will enter Deaths Reported E Hawley, 96, 1136 25th st. n.w. fl%fi\‘l‘:‘s. Nothing is so cheap consid- ering the results obtained. the water and swim with fairly good headway, though evidently well- pleased to reach the opposite shore and rest, ‘The skunk’s gun and ammunition have made him world famous. It is too bad the word got around that Skunkie fires his rounds indiscrim- inately. This is a weapon that is used only for self-defense, and even then, he gives his opponent time to change his mind. Perhaps, in his way, he knows what effect this far-reaching amber gas of his has. One thing must have pen- etrated his consciousness—he never fails to win. For this reason he can afford to be tolerant. He never in- stigates a quarrel and will walk off, even though one right-about with hoisted plume would be enough to scare the wits out of most of his neighbors. Socially, the skunks seem to have little to interest each other. They have no games. They sing no songs, they never dance. Their battle cry is a shriil scream and they growl over their food. A skunk’s stomach must have a special lining, as his most sought- for food during the summer is yellow jackets. They say he seeks them at night, or when it is quite | g cool, so their poison-filled needles are not in working order. He loves eggs, poultry, fish and small game. He does not store food, neither does he kill for sport. He has been given a bad, bad name, and can- not live it down. Marriage License Applications Robert H. The restriction on im- ports of the fruit from the United States and other countries, to aid the home market, has caused an outcry in which the merchants de- clare the Irish eating apple is nat adequate fo supply the public demand and that it has not the flavor of imported fruit. Irish growers chal- lenge the statements and the argu- ment may be put before the government. e SPECIAL_NOTICES. e Dol peeecd oL Lo 60 11th st. n.w., TF NOTICE 18 HEREBY o er THAT T WiLL not be-resnonsibie for dents incurreq By Any one other than mysell.
