By VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, May 8—Rising ten- dencies in today’s stock market centered mainly on steels and avie ations, together with a handful of specialties. Elsewhere many leaders exhibited considerable apathy and top gains running to 2 points or so for favorites were marked down at the close. Minor losses were well dis= tributed. Traders evinced much interest in the House of Commons debate on the British Norwegian reverse but apparently the only market effect was to bring in bidders for stocks that stand to profit from increased war purchases. The conclusion was that, even if Chamberlain is evene tually “given the gate,” the allie: will push their campaign agains the Germans with renewed vigor. Business news at home continued to be a sustaining influence. The list was lively in the fore- noon, but activity flattened out after midday. Transfers were around 700.000 shares. Bethlehem Steel went into new high ground for the year. Up at one time or another were United States Steel, Boeing, United Air- | craft, Eastern Air Lines, American | Airlines, American Smelting, Loft, Bendix, Lockheed and Eastman Kodak. Some backed away at the finish. General Motors was resistant as the company showed the best April sales to consumers for any month since April, 1937. New York Ship- building was the successful bidder for two light naval cruisers and the stock edged forward. Newmont Mining stepped up when directors voted a 100 per cent stock dividend. Not so pleasing was another slump in British Empire dollar bonds and a further drop of the “free” pound sterling to a new bottom in about eight years. The latter recovered | somewhat. Foreign markets were ragged. Commodities did better. Wheat at Chicago rose 12 to 1% cents a bushel and corn jumped® 153 to 17%. Cotton in late transac- tions, was up 10 cents a bale to off as much. Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, May 8—After rapid and erratic price movements most of the session, wheat values pushed upward to net.gains of more than a cent today. Corn rose almost 2 cents to the highest level since late s |in 1937. The critical European situation, including the British government crisis and reports of the fear of war spreading into Holland and Belgium, caused much uneasiness . |among grain dealers and prompted some of the late short covering. The pit heard unconfirmed rumors |that the United Kingdom was a buyer of United States corn over~ night or today. Wheat closed 1;-1% cents higher than yesterday, May 1.06-1.06's, July 1.05-1.047; corn 13%-174 higher, May 665, July 67%-3;; oats 55 upg WHEAT— -Ogen Low.
