By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 8 —British Em- pire issues took a drubbing again today in the bond market. ‘While traders followed reports of & soorching debate in the House of Commons over war policy, losses ranging to more than 4 points were posted near the end of the session for loans of Sidney, Queensland Brisbane, Australia and Canada. In the balance of the foreign list, however, moderate gains appeared for Italian, Danish and selected Japanese issues. Most domestic corporates were fractionally mixed. Up a trifie were Southern Railway 4s, Portland gen- eral Electric 41:s and St. Paul 5s. Losers included International Hy- ““droelectric 6s, International Tele- phone 5s and Pennsylvania general 4125 of '65. United States Governments tend- ed higher. Most of the British loans closed around the lows. Joining the slump in the final hour, numerous issues of Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways dropped 1 tol around 2 points. Brisbane 5s closed at 521;, down 61, and Australia 4155 at 55, down 3. In the corporate list final gains of a point or more were registered by Portland General Electric 42s and Pennsylvania Dixie Cement 6s. 50-Cent Boost In Steel Scrap Is Posted By the Associated Press. PITTSBURGH, May 8.—-Number one heavy melting steel scrap sold at $17.50 a ton today, an advance of 50 cents to a new range of $17- $17.50. A similar advance to $18-$18.50 a ton was posted for rail scrap, a opremium grade, yesterday. Another indication of strength in the scrap market, steel quarters said, was the price of $18 a ton Canada is paying for hydraulic bundles, an item which usually brings the same price as regular number one heavy melting in the domestic market. New York Cotton By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 8.—Cotton fu- tures moved within narrow ranges today. An unfavorably regarded weekly weather report was largely offset by beneficial rains in Texas and Oklahoma, but firmness in se- curities and recovery in grains en- couraged late Wall Street support. Easier overseas markets and the further declines in sterling brought in renewed Bombays and commis- sion house liquidation, depressing prices early. Midafternoon prices ranged 2 low- er to 2 higher; May (old), 10.54; July (old), 10.23; December, 9.70. Futures closed 6 higher to 2 lower. ©Old contract: Open. High. C, Open-Markef Rafe Of British Pound Skids Further Registers New Slump As Dealers Watch London Debate By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 8.—The open- market quotation of the British pound sterling, on the skids since the allied defeat in. Norway, took another tumble today as.the at- tention of exchange dealers centered on the House of Commons debate in London. Sterling at one time was off more than 5 cents from the previous day's close to a new low since 1933 around $3.32. The French franc and the Canadian dollar also slipped with the British currency. The “free” rate of the British currency, fixed by local demand and supply, was off more than 15 cents this week. The British exchange control's official buying rate for the pound is $4.021,. Dealings in the open-market were described by traders as relatively small because much of the mer- chandise trade between this coun- try and the British Empire is trans- acted at the official rate. Dealings in the open-market, it was said, were further curtailed by a desire among traders to stand aside to see what the next big move in the European situation will be. NEW YORK, May 8—Electric power output in the United States during the week ended May 4 de- clined slightly from the previous week, but maintained a good lead over last year, the Edison. Electric Institute said today. Latest production of 2,386,210,000 kilowatt hours was 6 of 1 per cent less than 2,397,626,000 in the preced- ing week, although 103 per cent ahead of 2,163538,000 in the com- parable 1939 week. The decline was less than season- ally anticipated. Hence the Asso~ ciated Press adjusted index of en- ergy output advanced to 122.1 from 1214 in the previous week and 113 a year ago. The index, based on 1929-30 as 100, is compensated for seasonal and long-urm trend. 1938, 1937, 111:5 15505 1 10803405 1214 112.3 1028 1118 El?
