A6 Chief Porfer Sees Danger in Reductions In Fire Personnel Reports 9-Month Cost by Flames Near $500,000 Figure Stephen T. Porter, chief engineer of the District Fire Department, told members of the Randle Highlands Citizens’ Association last night that 878 firemen is not a large personnel for a city the size of Washington, although at present the department is one of the best in the United States. Chief Porter declared, however, that further cuts in personnel would weaken the department's efficiency, as one reduction of 15 men this year had been “quite a blow” and they should be replaced. He pointed out that additional men should be as- signed to the fire department as the city is fast growing and expanding.
