Here is a sample of really great literature, which has stood the test of more than twenty-five hundred years. It is more exalted in style, more universal in its appeal, and more important in its content than anything else appearing in today’s paper. Indeed it is the really “big news” of the day. More readable and important than any comment that may be made upon it is this lofty 55th chapter of Isaiah’s prophecy: “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, andé— — eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Whereforesdo ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labor for that which satisfieth not? harken diligently unto Me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. In- cline your ear and come unto Me; hear, and your soul shall live: and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. * * * Seek ye Jehovah while He may be found; call ye upon Him while He is near; let she wicked for- sake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him re- turn unto Jehovah, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not as your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith Jehovah. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh | down and the snow from heaven, out the years. My worst suffering was an overmastering craving for water. And in the days of delirium which followed, my constant cry was for water, cold water. I know what physical thirst is; and I understand the psalmist'’s words, “As the hart panteth after the water-brooks, so panteth my soul for Thee, O God.” This is a universal cry that Isaiah utters. His promise of spiritual sat- isfaction is the biggest news in to- day’'s paper. For it not only implies an ending of the world’s present woes, but it also reaches out to eternal destiny for millions of hu- man spirits. Be it remembered that Isaiah’s message was primarily addressed to the exiled Jews in Babylon, soon to have the opportunity to return to Judah. That Babylonian sojourn | turned the Jews into merchants and moneymakers. It stamped upon them the commercial characteristic | which they have ever since borne. Therein we have the explanation of the prophet's plea that they should D. ¢, D. C. Liquor Situation Will Be Discussed - At Calvary Bapfist ‘Public Enemy No. 1’ Is Rev. W. S. T. Ellis. please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Having read that sublime passage, g0 back and read it again. Then lay down your paper and ponder it. Let the spell of these magic words play upon your imagination. Then muse upon the wonder of inspiration; for these are God-breathed sentences, spoken to the ages through the| trumpet tones of Isaiah. Like the astronomer, Keplar, we may “think God's thoughts after Him.” That is the highest quality of man. No other creature in the universe possesses it. Thereby we | know that we are children of God, made in His image. The lowliest mortal that lives, even the little| children—especially the little child— | may draw near to the Father of all, in understanding that the real things of life are spiritual. ‘Whether he toils on the farm, la- bors in the mine, sails the rough seas, or bends over a bookkeeper's weary chores, or, as a woman, la- the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto Jehovah, and He will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” There is the “good news"” which a greater than Isaiah later heralded, and proved upon the cross. Was the human race ever before the victim of such bewilderment as dominates it today? Millions are crying out for the intervention of God in the world's affairs. Yet He waits for man’s repentance and return. Our old Hebrew prophet reminds | us that God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, nor His ways our ways We need Isaiah’s quiet faith that our times are in the hands of an omnipotent Deity, who is also our Father. All else may change, but | His nature changes not. So we must enter into the patience of God. This anchor holds: God is. God reigns. God cares. God loves. Here we have the supreme reality —more real and important than the plans of politicians, the schemes of statesmen, the craft of criminals, the projects of professors or even the hopes of humanity. God has not let the times go out of His hands. His word will not return unto Him void. The Sunday school lesson for May 5 is, “Isalah Gives God's Invitation."—Iasaih 1lv. We all live a double life; the outward one that the world sees, and the inward one in relationship with the Infinite. Yet the prophet's promise is to every one that thirsteth. Why not then lift life up to its highest level of God-awareness? Like the psalmist, Isaiah pictures the world as thirsty—and how thirsty!
