Construction Pace Gains 10 Pct. in Metropolitan Area Dollar Value of Quarter $2,300,000, Dodge Reports Reveal ‘The accelerated construction pace during January-through-March credited the Washington Metropoli- tan Area with a 10 per cent pickup over the first quarter, a year ago. The dollar value of the improve- ment was set at $2,300,000. Dodge Reports emphasized in the monthly summary that while resi- dential building and engineering construction created a highly favor- able situation here, average de- creases developed in all classifica- tions throughout the greater part of the country. A grouping of all types of con- struction in the Washington Metro-~ politan Area, including the District, Arlington and Fairfax Counties in Virginia and Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland, re- | vealed that the contracts awarded for work and materials during the first three months moved up to $27980.000 in the 10 per cent rise from last year's corresponding $24,- | 701,000. It is significant that a more impressive gain was made over the 1938 period when the total was at | $12,779,000. Dodge Reports high lights the local gain by revealing that an average of 135 per cent was found in the construction field of the 37 States | east of ghe Rocky Mountains. | Non-Residential Gains More. The largest Washington area vol- ume was found under the non-resi- | dential classification. The contract | total for the quarter was $12,948,- | 000. That is 90 per cent above the level at the same point of 1939, when the figure was $6,792,000. In 1938 the corresponding figure was $3.302,000. An average decrease of 22 per cen | the garden.
