REAL EBTATE. Enamel That Dries In Hour Available In 20 Colors New Motorized Spray Guns Save Lot of Time In Painting Walls By DOROTHY DUCAS and * ELIZABETH GORDON. 8peed {s the keynote of American life, or so we have been told so often that we all believe it. It certainly is the keynote of domestic tasks, any- way, in everything from house cleaning and cooking to repair work and refurbishing. We want to keep our homes in the best possible con- dition, but life being what it is, we want to do this rapidly—with no waste motion and certainly with a minimum expenditure of the pre- clous commodity, time. So when we want to paint some- thing around the house we want a paint that will dry rapidly, and still have a handsome durable finish. We have just heard about an enamel that dries to touch in one hour. That doesn't mean it is completely dry, but it is not sticky when you pass an exploratory finger over it, and it won’t brush off on your clothes. Used on floors, it is safe to walk over the fresh paint in four to five hours. ‘This paint may be used inside or outside; on floors, woodwork and furniture. It comes in 20 lovely colors as well as in a clear finishing coat that puts a varnish-like coat- ing on floors or woodwork. It also comes in porcelain white and cream, but in these two colors, because of & different composition, it takes three or four hours to dry to touch, instead of one hour. The paint is easily applied with a brush or spray, and in most cases will do the finishing job with only one coat. When dry it is moisture and alcohol resistant, and we saw a demonstration of its resistance to heat. A piece of untreated metal painted with one coat of this new enamel was exposed to the direct flame of a match for one minute. When the surface had cooled a smoke stain was visible. A moistened cloth wiped the stain off. There was no sign of where the flame had been applied. The new enamel is made with a recently formulated vehicle of the synthetic resin type that has become | 80 popular in the varnish and enamel industry. It took six years to de- velop this particular vehicle, we are told, and the result is the acme of speed in drying, plus a hard, flint- like surface. The enamel is particularly good, in color, for finishing bathrooms, kitchens and furniture. It is excel- lent, in its clear amber-eolored form, for hardwood floors. We are trying some of the porcelain white to touch up a worn refrigerator. It costs $1.80 a quart or $1 & pint, and you can buy it in as small a quantity as one-quarter pint for 40 cents. Colors include three reds, two James A. Boorman. EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. Perhaps it tvouldn’t pay to buy a spray gun if you are going to paint | & door or a table, but when it comes to large surfaces, such as the out- side of your house, it is well worth the cost. And for difficult to get at | surfaces such as radiators, it defi- nitely takes the snail's pace effort out of painting. * %k Xk X Summer Water Heater. This is the time of the year when you are thinking of turning off the house-heating unit, in the hope there will be no more cold weather. It is, therefore, the time to think about making changes in your heat- ing system to insure better opera- tion next winter. Though you are about to put house-heating problems away until next autumn, it is wise to have your heating system cleaned and additions to it made now, so you won't forget to have these things done before the first frost of fall. While we are on the subject of painting—and who isn't in this spring house painting weather?— you might like to know about some new motorized spray guns which | take even more time out of paint- ing. For with steam or hot-water heat, tankless hot water | is efficient and inexpensive. The tankless water heater consists of 97 or more feet of copper tubing coiled within a tightly sealed heavy | cast iron or steel shell, which is at- | tached to the side of the botler. Cne end of the copper tubing is attached to the cold water .line, the other end leads to the pipe serving your hot-water faucets. It works this way: Hot water from | the boiler enters the shell of the | tankless heater, passes over the cop- per tubing and returns to the boiler to be reheated. The water inside the copper tubing is continually | heated by this boiler water, which, | however, never mixes with it at all. In the summer the hot water or steam pipes to radiators are shut off and just enough water is heated in the boiler to serve the domestic water heater. This summer use of the tankless water heater is confined to heating systems with oil burners, gas burners or coal stokers, however. Hand-fired systems can use the tankless water heater only in win- ter, employing a separate hot-water heater for summer. One advantage of using such a hot-water heater, according to its makers, is that a house heating Chase Blvd. HASE, MD. COULD TALK boiler and automatic firing devices depreciate more during summer non-operating periods than in win- ter working periods. If a heating plant is run intermittently in the summer mold from dampness in cellars and rusting of smoke pipes or metal equipment are prevented. The intermittent boiler operation creates just enough heat to keep the cellar dry, and that means the firing equipment is ready to do its heating job whenever it is asked to do so0. The main point—for this time of the year—is: “Find out about it now.” For this is the beginning of the best season of the year for heat and hot-water improvements. A heating system should take its sym- mer vacation all clean, repaired and improved, ready to go to work for you in the autumn without delay.
