New Paint Styling Gives Personality To Drab Room Complete Transformation Achieved by Carpentry And Imaginative Idea No matter how lacking in pos- sibilities a room may seem, there is always some way to rejuvenate it. A perfect wall flower of a room, when treated intelligently, may be- come the belle of the ball. For ex- ample, the metamorphosis of a sleeping room, square as a box and no more interesting, was achieved through the use of paint styling. To counteract this lack of personality, it was highly styled, with one wall painted a different color than the other three. The bedroom, as it stood before redecorating, was a confusion of tangled pattern and inharmonious colors. The figured walls, rug and spread all combined to detract from the serenity conducive to rest and relaxation. The jumbled appear- ance of the room was further in- creased by the lack of balance in furniture placement, the too-small rug islanding the center of the floor and the pictures of widely varying size and type of frame. Room Completely Transformed. With the aid of the new paint styling technique and its modern use of color, some carpenter's work and an imaginative idea, the room was completely transformed. First of all, the wall at the head of the bed was painted a rather deep aqua- marine blue. The other walls were painted a light tint of sand color, the trim an even lighter shade of sand and the ceiling just off-white— tinted with the sand tone. The top of the footboard of the old metal bed was cut off, the casters were removed from the legs to lower the bed, and a slip cover was made for the headboard, as a modernizing touch. The slip cover of the head- board, the bedspread and lamp shades were of pale yellow. On the floor, a large rug, extending from wall to wall, increased the sense of spaciousness in the room. Deep tones of harmonizing blues and greens appeared in the plaid design of the rug against a sand toned back- ground. With the aid of some simple car- pentry work, two cabinets were built against the wall at either side of the window; one to be used as a clothes closet, while into the other were built the drawers removed from the discarded old chiffonier. Between these two closets a shelf was placed to serve as a dressing table. This did not interfere with she emanation of heat from the radi- ator beneath the window but helped to disguise its ungraceful lines. The radiator was further camoufiaged by painting it the same color as the wall against which it was placed. A | scalloped valance cut from plywood borders the opening of the dressing table niche. Behind the valance are concealed the lights for the dress- ing table. Exotic Lamp Bases. Furthering the tropical influence, the dressing table chair is made of gtick bamboo, while bamboo forms a molding around the front surface of the pair of bookcases at the head of the bed. One of these cases con- tains a radio as well as books while the other is devoted entirely to books. Outstanding in the room and em- phasizing its exotic theme, Balinese dancing maidens of terra cotta serve as lamp bases. Painted in soft colors that blend with the tones of the room, extravagant blossoms of the South Sea Islands decorate the panels of the closet doors at either side of the dressing table. A floral print repeating the flowers of the door design was used as a slip cover for the old armchair. The lack of clutter and striking patterns in the room after its redecoration con- tribute greatly to the coveted air of repose. Painted Floors Revived An old idea for leaving floors bare in summertime and decorating them with paint has been revived. The well-known spatter-dash method is often employed, but in addition, large spirals or loops—even bor- ders—are also applied with paint. One floor, spatter-dashed in green- ish gun metal color is painted with large ivory-colored spirals in pairs. Another interesting device is a double-ended spiral of Mexican de- sign. Painted turtles provide excite- ment and entertainment in abun- dance, as guests in an aquarium or Ismall pond. They seem to possess and unholy glee in tormenting the small fish neighbors. The larger ones are merely chased, though usually minus a fin or even a com- plete tail after the chase is over. The wee ones are casual tidbits. These turtles are very numerous in the Middle Atlantic States. In Eastern North America, from New Brunswick to the Gulf of Mexico, they are well known, and in the Far South their range extends west- ward to Louisiana. With such wide distribution, these gay little dwell~ ers in shallow water become famil- jar sights to nature lovers who know just where to seek the home site. For the sake of those who may wish to become acquainted with these brightly-colored fellows, you may find one to six of them basking in the sunshine on a partially sub- merged log or boulder. Sometimes you catch a glimpse of one or more of them on a small island, where a little forest of bunch-grass af- fords a screen for the younger gener- ation, which are of a more brilliant color. | Father Turtle, when he closes his doors, will be about 4!z inches in 09000000000 aad LARGE SIDE HALL THREE BEDROOM of All New Homes 10% Down— 429 Int. As you know, turtles cannot swal- low their food unless the head is submerged completely. The food they find, in the waters consists of water plants for greens, tadpoles, small fishes and aquatic insects for meat. In an aquarium they are fond of raw chopped meat or fish or earthworms and, if you can find them, soft-bodied insect larvae. Lettuce leaves are always able.
