Department store sales in Wash- | ington in the week ended April 27 were 4.5 per cent beiow sales in the week ended April 29, 1939, and showed a drop of 16 per cent from the previous week this year, the Fed- eral Reserve Bank of Richmond an- nounced today Cumulative sales in Capital stores for the four weeks ended April 27 were practically the same as in the like period last year. being off only 1 per cent. the survey showed Sales in the whole fifth district were up 1 per cent for the week under review 3 per cent below the previous week and 1 per cent ahead of last year in the four-week period. Retail trade was very uneven, a group of cities enjoying a weekly gain of 157 per cent over last year, the review stated.
