Many people who have visited the Zoological Park in Washington, D. C., have been interested in watching the well-known red deer of Europe. It is a typical representative of the genus Cervus and belongs to a group which contains several species or varieties which have become well distributed over Europe, Asia, north= ern Africa and North America. Its outstanding characteristic is the conformation of the antlers. Red deer are shy and wary until | hearts that they need have no further fear about your actions. | They enjoy the friendship of those | who understand them, and will rec- ognize those who have ministered to their needs, eagerly coming to meet them. If they know a foe is present, they are poised and alert, never permitting one move of the enemy to scap them. But hidden foes almost drive them crazy. They become restless and worried, know- ing of their presence, yet not how to prepare to meet them when they come out in the open. Jolly Polly A Little Chat on Etiquette By JOS. J. FRISCH. R. W. After the mating season, the older males g0 away by themselves, hiding in &e forests or enjoying the high- nds. The short tail, with its surround- ing white patch, the reddish coat and the formation of the horns are the identifying marks. Over the greater part of Europe ‘'many fossil remains have been found in the caverns and superficial deposits. The antlers are much larger than those worn today by their de- scendants. In late September and October the deer seek their mates. Friends now become bitter foes. Terrible battles are fought, and sometimes both the victor and defeated perish, because the horns become so locked they cannot be separated. ‘The hinds may be silent spectators for hours, then walk off with an air that seems to say, “All right, fight it .out between you, I'l take the winner.” The fawns (there are sometimes |’ twins) are born in June. Their mother has found an isolated spot far from intrusion. The baby will not even lift its small head or / STAR, WASHINGTON, D. The older stags shed their antlers in February or March, going away among themselves where there is an abundance of low, strong vines and twigs, the old antlers may be pulled off. Squirrels and other rodents are very eager to find them, for they are considered a rare delicacy. ‘The life expectancy of these deer is 12 years: Some do live to be older, but the light of ambition does not brighten the eyes of the older generation, who have fought many battles and bear many scars. Twelve years is a rfpe old age and the younger generation are an im- patient lot, ready to take their places as leaders. Blank Books - O " our compiete stock. Phone for Prec Deliveryi E.
