Charles Phillips, 73, Dies; Retired Businessman Charles Phillips, 73, chairman of the Board of Directors and former president of the George F. Muth Co., Inc, artists’ supplies, died suddenly yesterday at his home, 43 Seaton place N.W. Death was attributed to & cerebral hemorrhage. Mr. Phillips was president of the company at the time of his retire- ment last September 1. Since then he had served as chalrman of the Board of Directors. A native of Martinsburg, W. Va., he came to Washington and began working with the Muth firm 51 years ago. He was a member of La Fayette Lodge of Masons and was a Knight Templar. For more than 40 years he had been a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lena Phillips; a daughter, - Mrs. Nannie Stoddard of Washington, and one grandchild. Tornadic winds ripping across sections of Southern Illinois, South- east Missouri and Arkansas and a cloudburst in East Texas killed at least 14 persons, injured many and caused thousands of dollars dam- age last night. Six were killed and eight injured, one critically, near Benton, Ark., as a tornado cut a 75-foot swath through a sparsely settled rural section. At least three were killed and an unestimated number were injured as tornadoes bounced over South- eastern Missouri and Southern Illi- nois. C, May 1—A small. energetic man who helped find ways of financing the United States during the World War, only to suffer bankruptcy and ill health in his last years, will be buried here today. He was Purnifold McLendel Sim- mons, who represented North Car- olina in the Senate from 1800 to 1830. He was the ranking Democrat on the Finance Committee and co- author of the Simmons-Underwood Tariff Act. Mr. Simmons, 86, died yesterday. He had been in retirement since 1930, when Josiah W. Bailey de- feated him in the senaterial race. Two years before, Mr. Simmons, a prohibitionist, resigned from the National Democratic Executive Committee after opposing Alfred E. Smith, presidential nominee, who advocated repeal of the 18th amend- ment. After leaving politics, Mr. Sim- mons went to his ancestral home and devoted his time to farming. He refrained from political activity, but did take occasion to comment that he never regretted 'is attitude toward Mr. Smith. From 1930 to; 1938, he often told friends. were the happiest years of his life. Then his second wife died. After that he lived with a daughter, Mrs. Wade Meadows, here. MILAN, Italy, May 1—Rosina Galli, wife of Giuglio Gatti-Casazza, for many years director of the New York Metropolitan Opera, died yes- terday after an attack of pneumonia. She went to the United States in 1912 and stayed for three years in Chicago, where she married Mr Gatti-Casazza, a childhood friend.
