NEW YORK, May 1—The sur- prise announcement of cancella- tion on May 1 of recent $4 a ton cut in rolled steel prices has brought in substantial orders, Iron Age said today in a weekly survey. “Along with the restoration of the sheet and strip prices that pre- vailed prior to April 11,” the re- view said, “is an upward trend in steel ingot production in several of the major districts and a strength- ening of scrap prices. “While the initial effect of recent price cuts was to retard the slowly rising trend of orders, the better- ment of the past week raised total sales for April above the March level. Some steel companies have recently booked more than their shipments,: while others have come close to their shipping volume. “Export business still accounts for |a substantial part of steel com- panies’ orders, though April sales were probably below those of March. Inquiries are plentiful, but foreign buyers are a little slower in closing. Recent orders included 25.000 tons for Italy and 15,000 tons for Great Britain. Shortage of ship space is handicapping the closing of busi- ness. “The first large shell order placed by the British in the United States ;| has been awarded to the American | Car & Foundry Co. 7's | will require 30,000 tons of shell steel.” The contract, The third consecutive weekly ad- vnnce in the Iron Age scrap price composite brought the figure to $16.38 a ton, a total gaiu of 34 cents from the low point of early April. Operations for the industry as a | cent of capacity this week, the re- view said. New Jersey Standard Ol Declares Extra Dividend < | By the Associated Press. NEW YORK.
