A-8 » KOSHER MARKETS KEEP DOORS SHUT Protest Against High Price of Wholesale Meats May Spread. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 4—Owners of B.000 kosher shops kept their doors shut today as indications grew that their protest “sit-down strike” against the high price of wholesale meats might spread to non-kosher retail shops here and in Boston and Balti- more. Pledged to Continue Strike. With only one dissenting vote, 3,000 members of the Federation of Kosher Butchers at & mass meeting yesterday pledged themselves to continue the strike, begun Saturday night, until “we have achieved the desired result in bringing about a reduction in the price of meat.” The butchers shouted down & sug- gestion by Max Mencher, secretary of the city department of markets, that they reopen their stores while the de- partment and the United States De- partment of Agriculture completed an investigation into meat costs and sell- ing practices in the city. Move to Break Monopoly. Charles Marks, attorney for the Washington Heights local of the New York State Association of Retail Meat Dealers, in a telegram pledged his support in obtaining “‘complete stop- page in non-kosher shops as well as non-kosher shops until the meat mo- nopoly is broken.” Representatives of Boston and Bal- timore kosher butchers said similar strikes were under consideration, LOUISIANA RITES HELD FOR SHANGHAI VICTIM Farmers and Trappers Crowd Lit- tle Town—Military Mass Held for Sailor.
