Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Miss Emma Krunsherg of Atlanta; three sons, Samuel Krunsberg, Paul J. Krunsberg and William J. Krunsberg, and one sister, Miss Abrander Kruns- berg, all of Norfolk. Still Finnish Citizen. Krunsberg was 22 years old, a fresh recruit in the Navy, when he joined the expedition which found the sur- viving explorers. At that time he was still a Finnish citizen. In those days the Navy needed recruits and the lack of citizenship papers did not bar an able-bodied young sailor from the service. Krunsberg saw action in the Span- ish-American war. In the World War he was made a coal inspector. He retired from service in 1921 as a chief boatswain's mate. He credited the Salvation Army with turning him to religion in 1896, and always after that he was vitally in- terested in the organization, He served as a Reserve member of the Army for many years. High Point in Career. ‘The high point of his career, how- ever, was that cold day in June, 1884, when he raised a telescope to his eyes and saw “a moving object” on the Arctic wastes that turned out to be a member of the long lost Greely ex- pedition. He was the first man to sight the survivor. Gen. Greely’s expedition was dis- | g | Patched to the Arctic in 1881 and reached 83 degrees, 24 minutes lati- tude, a record for that time. Cut off from civilization, the ex- pedition dwindled while two search- ing parties, in 1882 and 1883, tried vainly to find it. When the party of which the hardy young Krunsberg was a member arrived, only seven of the 22 were alive.
