(Oryzomys palustris.) BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. ANY times first cousin§ re- semble each other. This is true of the rice and cotton rats. They are distantly re- lated to the white-footed mice, hand- somely groomed and dainty little neighbors. Rice rats are really large mice. They have medium-sized ears al- most hidden in their soft, furry coats. The nose is pointed and the whiskers are decidedly active. The ground color of the coat is brown above and gray below. Since rice is their staple food, nat- urally you will find great numbers in places where their Chinese diet is grown. When you visit the marshes along the coast from Southern New Jersey to the Gulf States, and espe- cially in those where rice plantations are easily reached, you may come across their dainty cup-shaped nests, very well made in every detail. Some rice rats have departed from family traditions and are to be seen a distance from other members of their family. They have added grasses and other seeds to their diet. These rice harvesters, one of which is shown here, do not even have days that are free from the fear of invading foes. They must look well as they race through the The HECHT Co.
