REAL ESTATE. ODORS REMOVAL PROCESS FOUND Activated Carbon Purifies Air That Might Be In- jurious to Health. Discovery of a process tn remove odor concentration in air-conditioned buildings is reported to the American Chemical Society by Dr. V. A. Gant of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and H. D. Shaw of the Pullman Co. Activated carbon, de- scribed as a more efficient kind of charcoal, purifies the odor-laden air in which danger to health may lurk. “In air conditioning any struc- ture where certain percentages of fresh air and recirculated air are utilized, in time the odor concentra- tion will increase to the point where it is very objectionable, and may pre- tent a health hazard and industrial problem,” the report explains. “It then becomes necessary to remove the odor or its cause. If complete re- moval is impossible, the odor concen- tration should be reduced to the point where it is no longer noticeable. “Complete air conditioning involves the control of temperature, humidity, dust and odors. These factors can- | not be controlled satisfactorily unlosc‘ we have scientific and practical proof a8 to the efficiency of the equipment. Temperature can be observed on & | thermometer, humidity on the hygro- meter and dust by suitable dust- counting apparatus. Methods are known whereby odorous substances known to exist in the air can be de- termined quantitatively, but informa- tion obtained in this way is not sat- isfactory for obvious reasons. The odors may be so complex and derived | from so many different sources that | simple chemical determinations of | one or more odoriferous substances | may represent only a small percent- | age of the total amount present. “Solution of the problem resolves itself into the following steps: (1) to determine the total odor concentration by a scientific and practical method; (2) to reduce the concentration effec- tively by some efficient and economical | material; and (3) to prove by the de- | veloped method how much the odor concentration is reduced by using this material.” The chemists devised a freezing-out method for determining the con- centration. Solid carbon dioxide, con- tained in a properly insulted box, was the refrigerant used in the experi- ments to freeze out moisture and odor | in an efficient eondenser tube, through | which measured amounts of air were | drawn at a low velocity. Liquid air | was not used on account of the expense | The installation of an outdoor flush | and danger involved. An osmoscope ! was employed to determine the relative | odor value of the condensate by thc air-dilution method. | “Activated carbon was demon- strated to be a safe, very efficient and economical means of removing the | odor in an air-conditioned structure,” the report concludes, North Pole Play Liked. That's why it is strange that until recent | times the heat that went up the D. C, SATURDAY, chimney from an open fireplace was completely wasted. Bomething has been done to rem- edy the situation, the something be- ing a form for a fireplace which utilizes the warmth of the flames. It turns the otherwise squandered heat back into the room or rooms where heat is needed. If you have been thinking of building a fire- place, consider this fireplace form, which, supplemented by short ducts and registers, gives you a miniature warm-air furnace and enough heat for mild Ayumn days, to say nothing of helping save fuel on your regular heating system in the dead of Winter. The unit is not an addition to the fireplace, but a built-in part of it. It insures correct design, for it is guar- anteed to make the fireplace draw. Half of all fireplaces in existence to- day cannot be used becdlse they won't draw and because they smoke. You may obtain your money back, plus $20 for removal and reshipment of the unit, if your fireplace smokes when built around this unit. The way it works is simple.
