NCE you have seen an avenue of royal palms you know that these trees have been rightly named. There is something inspiring about. them that lifts your spirits, no matter how low in Your mind you feel. We are justly proud of the royal palms to be found in the southern part of Florida and on Longs Key. g {If we have the joy of visiting Cuba ol we have vistas of long, white roads guarded on either side by royal palms 80 to 100 feet high. No wonder the natives in tropical countries worship them. There are few trees that have the tropical atmosphere that always sur- rounds these palms. They have such a luxuriant crown of foliage, many of the leaves 10 to 12 feet long. They bend gracefully outward and bow gently downward in a fashion that never fails,to attract your attention. The beautiful, tall trunks reach for the bright sunshine from flaring bases. This part is a beautiful green. It is smooth, with ridges showing where the leaves had been. Though the flowers are far from close-inspection possibilities, they are indeed sizable as befits so majestic a tree. They are borne in branched spikes, almost 2 feet long, and are clustered at the base of the crown of foliage. They bloom in January in Cuba, February in Florida. The flowers are replaced by oblong berries, an exquisite violet blue and about one-half an inch long. When A the ripe seeds drop to the ground they take root quickly if conditions are favorable. Birds love them and help to scatter the royal paims to a large extent in Central America and the West ‘Indies, where so many of | the wonderful trees flourish. Royal palms are not only very valuable as avenue trees, but they are very valuable for piles for wharves and also for walking sticks, two very different uses indeed. One of the interesting habits of the royal palm is the way it puts on new leaves in the crown and drops the lower leaves growing at the base n { of it. These strong, durable leaves are used for thatching humble cot- tages of the natives in Cuba and the tropics. Palms are tropical plants and surprisingly are relatives of the lilies and grasses.
