SILVER STAR HOME ON WRILEY ROAD OPENS TOMORROW Award for Merit for Week Goes to Developers of Westhaven, Md. STRUCTURE SELECTED IS EARLY AMERICAN Living Room Furniture of Maple. Color Scheme Designed for Summer Living. The Silver Star award for merit | fn home building this week goes to the developers of Westhaven, Md., a planned community fostered by the developers of Westmoreland Hills in | nearby Montgomery County. The home selected and approved by The Star's.committee of experts in all fields of housing is a distinctive early American dwelling, designed by Schrier & Patterson, members of the American Institute of Architects, and built by the Westhaven® Development Corp. Located at 5510 Wriley road, two blocks off Massachusetts avenue ex- tended, the exhibit house opens to- morrow for a four weeks' period of demonstration under auspices of this newspaper. It has been completely | furnished for display purposes by the | Studio of Interior Decoration of Woodward & Lothrop. Members of Committee. The Star's committee, which voted to give the coveted Silver Star rating to this home, is composed of James 8. Taylor, associate director, Division of Economics and Statistics, Federal | Housing Administration; Irvin S. Por- ter, Washington Chapter, A. I. A Tom Sandoz, son of the president, ‘Washington Real Estate Board, and E. H. Rosengarten, former president, Master Builders Association. John Nolen, city planner, National Capital Park and Planning Commission, was unable to view the dwelling, due to liness. Homes chosen for exhibition as Sil- ver Star dwellings are rated on the basis of their architectural authentic- | ity, livability of plan, sturdiness of eonstruction, quality of materials, en- vironment and community plan, as well as monetary value. The Westhaven model home con- tains living room, dining room, kitch- | en and downstairs lavatory on the first floor, with three bed rooms and main bath on the second floor. The basement plan includes a large recrea- tion room, furnace room and laundry, as well as maid's lavatory. In planning the interior decora- tive scheme, the decorators gave full | eonsideration to the architecural style of the home. It has been fur- nished with the thought of giving a small family a pleasing background and a gracious place for comfortable living. Maple Furniture Used. In the living room, for example, the warm tones of early American maple | bespeak informality. The pieces, placed so that each forms an in- tegral part of the room unit, are ap- | propriately grouped. There are chairs | which can be easily drawn to the sofa | to form a conversational group. | The color scheme is planned for cool Summer living. Chintz draperies with their large bouquet design key the entire color .scheme. The sofa | slip covers are in a wide stripe which gaily repeats the colors found in the draperies, The yellow linen cover for the large chair makes an intefesting color note against the soft gray wall peper. The blue, yellow and white | Sisal rug gives an added Summer- like appearance to the room. Ac- eessories carry out the general tone. With fhe thought that spaciousness is implied when connecting rooms are carried out-in similar decorative style, the dining room features the same | maple as the living room. The pieces | ~—maple drop-leaf dining table, corner | eupboard, small sideboard and ladder- back chairs—are scaled to the size | and proportions of the room. The | color scheme is blue and white, wnhi draperies in heavy mesh.net in tones | of blue and off white, with the rug following the pattern’ of that in the living room. Pine-Paneled Game Room. ‘The pine-paneled game room, set | off with modern chromium, fabricord | covered furniture, is considered ideali for the “rumpus room.” The color | design of this room is gay, blending| green, red and black. On the second floor, the master bed | room takes its color inspiration from | the wall paper, a soft blue with o | CORNER of 15th ST. delightful all-over spray design in dusty pink and silver.
