Architecture is regaining the leader- ship which it lost during the transition from hand to machine work, Prof. Walter Gropius of Harvard University declares in a paper prepared for the American Institute of Architects. Reuniting the art of building and the art of space is the task of the architect of the next generation, ac- eording to Prof. Gropius, internation- ally known for his “revolutionary and logical approach to architectural de- sign.” “There are many symptoms indi- eating that architecture is setting out again to play a leading and compre- hensive part in the generation to come,” he says. “Architecture has to come to terms with the machine and is to take the lead in forming the whole entity of our towns. “It is not a question of giving one profession intellectual precedence over others, but a natural arrangement in | keeping with their different natures. | A painter, a sculptor or a craftsman builds up his work personally with his own hands, whereas the work of the architect is dependent upon the collaboration of numerous assistants. Heresy With Us. “Painting, sculpture, hand work and machine work are all to be developed &gain in an organic relationship with the art of building. Thus we should help the coming generation of archi- tects to become again the backbone of the whole building profession, to develop abilities of leadership by vir- tue of which there can be unity in the work as a whole in spite of a mul- tiplicity of collaborators. “We have still to face the wide- | o spread heresy that art and architec- ture are just luxury, that fatal legacy from a generation which arbitrarily elevated some of its branches above Twenty-eighth street, Ross H. By depriving hand- icrafts and i stry of the informa tive services of the artist, particularly of the architect, the academic educa- tion drained them of their vitality. | “But art is not one of those things that may be imparted. Whether a design be the outcome of skill or creative impulse depends upon indi- | vidual propensity. But if art cannot be taught or learned, a thorough | knowledge of its principles and sme-, | ness of hand can be. Both are as| necessary to the architect of genius 88 to the ordinary artisan. Too Traditional Training. “The fact that the architect of to- day is from the outset left too much | to traditional specialized training, | which merely imparts to him an_erler- | tic knowledge and does not make clear | to him the meaning and purport of | his work, nor the relationship in which | he stands to the world at large, can| be counteracted first of all by putting at the beginning of the training not the ‘trade’ but the ‘human being’ in his natural readiness to grasp life as a whole. “The old idea of school has to be overcome and replaced by a work-| ing community. The designer must learn | & special language of shape in order | to be able to give visible exp'ecsion\ to his ideas. “If we want to faise the standard of the architect’s profession, we must make it again socially and economi- | cally indispensable to the whole com munity; that is to say, we must defi- | nitely overcome that unpleesant state of being regarded by ignorant people as a costly esthetic luxury within the building profession.” Painted Like a Rug. JULY 10, 1937 dwelling units. Real estate boards in the Central and Middle West have agreed on this figure, based upon a survey of the deficit areas created by the depression. J. J. Cermak, secretary of the insti- tute, presents the following analysis of the building situation, founded upon Department of Labor compilations for the first four months of 1937: “At the rate residential construc- tion has moved from January through April of the current year, 1937 should see 205788 new dwelling units com- pleted and probably occupied. Such an achievement would show a gain over 1936 of 68 per cent. “Conservatively estimated and as- suming a steady building pace during the next four years—that is, through 1941—some 433,000 new homes wiil be built. But, assuming that building continues to advance and shows a 50 per cent Increase for each of the four years (through 1941), the dwell- ing units completed will be but 2,- 495,152, “This figure is something over one- third of 6,000,000 homes needed to properly house the country's popula- REAL EBTATE tion.
