More than 200 had enrolled for the free course in swimming by this| morning, as the first of the series of | six swim lessons was given at the| Central “Y” Building, 1736 G street, in connection with the Young Men's Christian Association learn-to-swim campaign, being _conducted in co- operation with The Star. Many additional applicants were expected during the day. The first | group took the first of the series of 6ix lessons at 10 am. today. Ten other groups also were scheduled to begin the course during the day, with the last set for 9:15 p.m. The second lesson will be given the 11 groups tomorrow, and the third lesson of the series Friday. There will be no lessons given on Saturday or Sunday. Lessons Nos. 4, 5 and 6 will be given next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Indorsed by Ruhland. The learn-to-swim campaign was indorsed today by Dr. George C. Ruhland, District health officer, who classed swimming as the third best of all forms of exercise, saying: “Next to walking and dancing, I consider swimming the most hral(hrult of physical exercises. I heartily ap- prove your ‘learn-to-swim' cam- Ppaign.” Today's lesson serves as an intro- duction to the water for beginners. The object is to make them feel at home in the water and lose any fear they might have. This is accom- plished by those taking the lessons submerging themselves under the wa- ter, while holding their noses, and then going down without holding their noses. Next, they are taught the *jelly-fish float.” The foundation of the swim stroke will be taught in the second lesson tomorrow. Last Day for Applications. Applications for the course will be received at the “Y” up to tonight.| All applicants must be registered, | however, in time to take the first les- | son, the last of which will be given | the group at 9:15 p.m. A loud-speaker system has been rigged up at the pool this year to| enable the instructors to be heard above the sound of splashing water, UNREPORTED GOLD EXPORTS REVEALED Reserve Board Statistics Show $65,700,000 in Metal Has Left U.
