C. Trade. BY EDWARD C. STONE. General business conditions in Washington, Maryland and Virginia for the next six months should be "“good,” according to a survey just completed by Brookmire, relating par- ticularly to sales prospects and the credit outlook. The Brookmire service calls especial attention to the recent gain here of 13 per cent in bank debits, compared with the like period in 1936, to an Increase of 14 per cent in retail trade and a jump of 43 per cent in building activity. Turning to a group of Eastern Btates which includes Maryland and West Virginia, the forecast presents an estimate that consumers’ incomes in the next six months will be 18 per cent ahead of the like period Jast year. Incomes from manufactur- ing in April rose to the highest level since 1929, but such incomes will | probably stabilize for some months around current levels, the survey says, adding that this will probably reduce | percentage gains over last year. Prospects in Nearby Areas. Referring further to Maryland and adjoining States, the forecast says that farmers' incomes in April were 18 per cent above last year, but these gains will probably narrow in the remainder of the year. pril build- ing volume widened, as did output of electricity. A good level of business is in prospect, though gains should barrow for some months. Looking at Virginia and the Caro- linas and other Southern States, the survey says that consumer income in the next six months is estimated at | 19 per cent better than a year ago. Farm income is estimated to reveal a better gain than that from other sources. Cotton acreage is larger in most States, with crop conditions good. Farm income in March was 81 | per cent above last year. “Trade volume is now good, with the out- look improving,” the forecast con- cludes, In Maryland in April, the report says, bank debits were up 16 per cent, life insurance sales 23 per cent, elec- tricity production 2 per cent, building | 27, pay rolls 25, passenger auto regis- | trations dropped 12 per cent and | trucks 8, farm income was up 47 per cent, gasoline consumption 17, cement cghipments 50, while there was a 22 per cent decrease in business fail- ures. Virginia Debits Soar. Virginia bank debits in April \\Clc‘ up 19 per cent, life insurance sales 9, | electricity production 20, building 37, cotton spinning hours 9, pay rolls, 25, | passenger car registrations 7 and | trucks 3, farm income 45, gasoline consumption 32, cement shipments 20 | and business failures 30 per cent | higher than a year ago, the survey | announces, the conclusion being | reached that a “stabilizing tendency | 1s likely to prevail in consumer income over the next several months” and that “satisfactory trade outlets should | be found in all sections of the coun- try.” Corporate earnings, which have al- ready established notable gains, can be expected to record further substan- | tial progress, and basic economic con- ditions indicate that business expan- sion will follow a temporary Summer low, according to Brookmire, despite recent wage costs, as the use of more efficient machinery, now being bought in record amoun and increasing | busines activity both tend to reduce unit costs. | Hamilton Votes Dividend. Directors of the Hamilton National | Bank, meeting vesterday, declared a | dividend of 50 cents per share on the“ outstanding stock, payable August 2, | to stockholders of record on July 23. | ‘The board also authorized a transfer ©of $25.000 to surplus, Sidney F. Taliaferro, trust officer of the Riggs National Bank, will ap- | pear on the program at the joint an- nual convention of the Virginia and ‘West Virginia State Bankers' Associa- | tions, at White Sulphur Springs, later this month. According to the pro- gram he will conduct a round table dis~ cussion on trust matters. The con-| vention dates are June 24, 25 and 26. | Joshua Evans jr., vice president of | the Hamilton National Bank, is plan- ning to attend the same convention | and it is anticipated that several other | Washington bankers will be present. It is the first joint meeting the two State associations have planned. Some 800 financiers and guests are expected. Crowley Reports Bank Merger. Chairman Leo T. Crowley of the Federal ‘Deposit Insurance Corp. an- | nounced today that the Farmers &: Mechanics’ Trust Co., Cape Charlfisfl Va., with deposits of $1,261,400, has | been taken over by the Northampton | County Trust Co. at Cape Charles. The merger is in line with other merg- ers arranged by the Federal authori- ties without any loss to depositors, | five such consolidations being com- | pleted during the past month in the‘ insurance corporation’s campaign to| eliminate unnecessary or uneconomic | banks. Numerous visitors' attractions of the Nation's Capital have been publicized in a 52-page tour book issued by the | Aetna Casualty & Surety Co. of Hart- ford, Conn. Distribution of this book, “Aetna Pleasure Trails,” is expected to reach a Nation-wide total of 100,000 copies during 1937 and bring to the | attention of thousands of people the many points of interest in this| vicinity.
