Bs the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, June 9—Furniture makers are looking for brisk sales in July markets Early Spring markets fell far short of the bull's eye. Some trade circles, searching for the reason, have cited strikes. Others have attributed the comparative timidity of dealers to fear of consumer resistance based on rising prices. This fear, it was recalled, was particularly pronounced owing to climbing commodity prices during early Spring. Of recent weeks, how- ever, commedity prices have declined and with them misgivings about the possible effects of retail price mark- ups. With estimates of expanding farm purchasing power coming to the fore and comparatively well sustained buy- ing power in industrial communities, current opinion is that retail price advances will be fairly readily ab- sorbed. Statistics compiled by Seidman & Seidman, accountants, disclose that in 1932, the depression low, furniture sales had toppled to about 26 per cent of the 1923-1925 average. They snapped back to 51 per cent in 1936 and now are at about 85 per cent of 1923-1925. One thing on which extension of |gains in furniture sales depends, analysts maintain is home building Although the two ran almost parallel during the 1920’s, home building had the sharper fall in the depression. Home building has been on the up- swing the past two years. About six weeks ago trade experts started to | predict higher building material costs and wages would likely slow down gains in this fleld. These predictions have recently been borne out by the facts. As some see it, failure of the home- building industry to regain its energy may serve to take the edge off gains in furniture sales. | Washington Exchange SALES. Use ‘B M STEEL RATE SHOWS MODERATE GAINS Surprisingly Little Change in Operations Noticed Despite Strikes. By the Assogfated Press. NEW YORK, June 9 —Market con- ditions in the steel industry show “surprisingly little change” despite strikes at plants of three major pro- ducers, Iron Age said today in its weekly review. | The st iegate vollune ofingohouts | put has increased at some unaffected | plants, bringing the estimated aver- age for the country to 78 per cent, a slight rise over last week, the trade | | “Only a negligible amou ness has been switched affected companies to those that are operating,” the review stated, “indi- cating consumers have ample stocks for the present and are not seriously inconvenienced.
