GOLDEN GATE SPAN OPENED T0 PUBLIC 100,000 Start to Walk Across Bridge—Cars to P Use It Tomorrow. By the Associated Press. SAN FRANCISCO, May 27—A hundred thousand persons started out today to walk across the Golden Gate as San Francisco’s new $35,000,- 000 bridge, world’s longest suspension span, was turned over to the public after nearly five years of work. ‘Their pathway lay across 4,200 feet ©f shining concrete and red steel which swing high over the tides of a world- famed waterway, joining San Fran- cisco to Marin County, southernmost section of Northern California’s Red- ‘wood empire. The occasion was “pedestrian day.” Tomorrow the bridge will be opened to automobile traffic. Anti-Nazi Boycott Threat. An anti-Nazi boycott threat by the Maritime Federation of the Pacific hung over San Francisco's week-long fiesta and the city’s largest hotels still were tied up by a strike that was in its twenty-seventh day. Neither ap- peared to affect the gayety of thou- sands of visitors. The boycott threat was voiced by Z. R. Brown, San Francisco Maritime Federation secretary, as the after- math of &n incident Tuesday in which six men tore a large piece out of a Nazi swastika flag hanging among decorations over Market street. Mayor ‘Angelo J. Rossi declined to order re- moval of all German flags. The boy- ®ott warning followed. Two Soviet Flags Removed. Two Soviet flags were removed last Week at the request of war veterans. A costume ball in the civic audi- torium last night was the occasion for the crowning of Vivian Sorenson, stately San Francisco girl, as flesta queen. This morning the Fiesta Committee scheduled a parade of 20,000 persons. HITLER PAPER PROTESTS. Demands International Courtesy in Swastika Flag Incident. BERLIN, May 27 (#).—Reichsfueh- rer Hitler's personal organ, the Voel- kischer Beobachter, under the cap- tion “Red Rowdies,” commented to- | day on the ripping of a swastika flag by unidentified men Tuesday in San Francisco. “Germany has the rihgt to expect that authoriites will be in a position to give effect to laws governing in- ternational courtesy despite the threats of Marxist provocateurs who provenly have nothing in common with the real feeling of broad masses of the American Nation,” the news- paper said. “All the easier should it be for au- thorities to give proof of their good will, which they so frequently have professed publicly.” (The German flag was part of the decorations for the Golden Gate Bridge flesta starting today.) —_— DISABLED OFFICERS’ PAY SUIT IS FILED Virginia Veteran Asks Court to Bar Removal From Retire- ment List. 1In a suit estimated to affect between 2,000 and 3,000 disabled emergency officers of the World War, Alfred K. Gilman, Virginia veteran, asked Dis- trict Court yesterday to decide that President Roosevelt has no outhority : under the economy act to issue regula- tions which allegedly struck 4,500 of- ficers off the retirement list. Through Attorney Robert H. Me- Neill, Gilman told the court regula- tions promulgated by the President provide liberal presumptions for those attempting to qualify for pensions, but make the requirements for disabled emergency officers so strict as to elim- ‘nate 75 per cent of those once receiv- ing retirement pay. The emergency officer must prove %ot only that his disability was in- curred in the service, but that it would) Tot have been incurred had he not been in the service, the suit stated. Reviewing the history of retirement Denefits for emergency officers, the Plaintiff said they were first provided for by the Tyson-Fitzgerald act, passed in 1928, giving retirement pay to all having permanent 30 per cent disabil- Ity. When President Roosevelt came into office March 4, 1933, about 6,000 disabled emergency officers were re- ceiving benefits under this act. With passage of the economy act, however, the President acquired wide discretion in determining the rights of ‘World War veterans. The regula- tions complained of were issued by him in the first month of his term. papin (O PURE o WHITE o SOFT ABSORBENT “COUNTRY FAIR” CRUISE T0 BE GIVEN JUNE 22 Cup nenttn Association An- nounces Plans Which Include Dancing. he President's Cup Regatta Asso~ clmon announced yesterday plans are taking shape rapidly for the “Country Fair” Gold Cup cruise to he held on the steamship Potomac June 22.
