By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 27.—Reports in Wall Street say there has been a moves ment among some commission houses to trim expenses in preparation for an indefinite siege of quiet. The decline in Stock Exchange memberships to $91,000 this week was accepted by ob- servers as a hint brokers are none too hopeful of early revival in trading. Business has shrunk in nearly all departments — commodity, stock and bond trading and distribution of new issues. On previous lulls the last two years underwriting houses managed to keep fairly busy with refunding op= erations and scattered offerings to raise new capital. Big flotations of Treasury issues helped keep the bond market lively. But in wake of the Spring decline in security markets and shake-out of world speculation in commodities, Wall Street has been more completely be- calmed than probably at any time since sustained industrial recovery got a firm toe-hold in the Spring of 1935, financial observers say. In fact, it is too widespread to last very long, some | brokers contend. The busy production rush in steel, textiles, farm implements and other industries still makes a contrast with the drift of security markets. Until the Spring break came along, markets and business were swinging along the recovery path hand in hand, although many analysts said speculative markets were trying to force the pace. Fresh buying in non-ferrous nletals this week and sustained activity in steel have been accepted in business quarters as reminders industry is in no mood to relapse hurriedly into the lazy pace of security markets, But market experts are reluctant to take cues from the current per= formance of business. They are look= ing ahead to the outcome of the ad- ministration’s rejuvenated drive for new financial and industrial controls in Washington.
