VERDICT 4S NEAR IN'HATCHET GASE Trial of Gladys MacKnight and Former Sweetheart Approaches Close. 85 the Associated Press. JERSEY CITY, N. J,, May 27—The last chapter in the hatchet-slaying love story of Gladys MacKnight, 17, and Donald Wightman, her red- haired boy friend, started today in Hudson County Court. It was a tangled chapter of ro- mance turned to hate, a tale that may end in prison or death. Lawyers wrote it on the record of the joint trial of the two in a final , effort to free them from charges of slaying Mrs. Helen MacKnight with a hand ax last July 31. The 12 middle-aged jurymen heard their counter accusations, “He did it, she did it,” reviewed by their counsel in summation. Gladys’ atttorney, R. Lewis Ken- nedy, took care first to repeat her story that Donald grabbed the hatchet and struck while she struggled with her mother over a kitchen knife Mrs. MacKnight brandished. Next was to come Col. George T. | Vickers, Donald's attorney, to repeat | his version; “Gladys hollered, ‘Hold her Don. 1 grabbed Mrs. MacKnight and simul- | taneously the blows were struck by | Gladys.” Prosecutor Daniel T. O'Regan was ready to demand death in the electric | chair for both. The case was expected to go to the jury late today. Takes Lead as Nation’s . Champion Cornerstone Layer B3 the Assoctated Press. Unofficial statisticians unveiled Postmaster General James A. Farley today as the new champion among building dedicators. He is now on 'a dedicatory swing through the Southwest, which his backers contend will put him far ahead of such cornerstone layers as Mrs. Roosevelt and Secretary Ickes. Farley's technique consists of more than a bow to a local official and a snipping of ribbon—he makes speeches. Although none of these addresses is duplicated, the Postmaster General —Ilike any champion—clings to a dedicating formula, Here's the way he launched into some recent efforts: “I am glad to be here today—" “I deem it an honor and a pleas- ure—" “I am grateful for the opportu- nity—" “I am indeed grateful for the op- portunity—.” He has changed to this short, punchier style in two years. Back in 1935 his introductions were more ponderous. *“The honor,” he said then, “of par- ticipating with the citizens of Phila- delphia in the dedication of their magnificent new post office building is one that is greatly appreciated.” Only once has Farley had trouble with a dedication. That was when he recently uttered an historical in- accuracy in helping the people of Ar- lington, Va., open their new post office. “I recall from the pages of my school books,” he said, “that Sir Wal- ter Raleigh landed in North Carolina, then a part of Virginia.” Pointing out that Sir Walter never MADE AT HOME BUT READY-MIXED" = THE DERWOOD MILL DERWOOD, MD.
