SMELTING ELECTS | 5 the Associated Press tu Illmms Central Earnings Remain Above 1936 Level By the Assoctated Press. CHICAGO, May 20.—L. A. Downs, president of the Illinois Central sys- tem, told stockholders at the annual meeting that despite the Ohio River flood the road had a better earnings record the first four months of 1937 than in the corresponding 1936 period. Downs said the improvenment in net income for the period amounted to $130,000, which indicated a deficit for the period of approximately $1,347,786, inasmuch as the Illinois Central had a deficit of $1,486,786 in the first four months of 1936. Downs said the flood caused con- siderable loss of traffic for about four weeks and necessitated large expendi- tures to repair damage. Gross revenues up to April 30 showed an increase of 7 per cent over the 1936 period, he said, while expenses were 6 per cent larger. Downs, W. Averill Harriman and Charles A. nroe, whose terms as directors expired, were re-elected. CHICAGO PRODUCE. CHICAGO, May 20 ().—Poultry. rucks: ~steady.
