BALTINORE TRO DLES ASSEHBLY White Attacks Bruce, Ennis and Curran for Their “Interference.” BY JACK ALLEN, Staff Correspondent of The Star. ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 30.—The | Maryland Assembly was no nearer a olution of its $5,000,000 relief prob- lem today, despite the appearance of Howard Bruce, Democratic national committeeman from Maryland, and with two Baltimore political leaders, in an attempt to “be helpful.” As a matter of fact, the appearance of Bruce, William Curran and Rob- ert E. Ennis in Annapolis yesterday and Bruce's subsequent action in opening headquarters in the Capitol | and calling in, one by one, Speaker Emanuel Gorfine, Delegate Kent R Mullikin, chairman of the Ways and | Means Committee, and members of THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. For instead of consideration of Ennis’ and Curran’s suggestions for a relief tax, the irate House of Dele- gates took time out to listen to a bit- ter attack on the trio. White Leads Attack. The castigation, lead by Delegate John S. White of Prince Georges County, denounced Bruce for ‘inter- fering” and Ennis and Curran “for proposing a tax program.” Bruce left Annapolis shortly before midnight, openly expressing his dis- gust at the reception accorded what he termed an effort to be of assistance. | He was particularly incensed at the | attitude of White. | Today the Senate and House were still groping about for some means of ratsing $1,000,000 to complete their relief programs as the special session swung into its second week. Income Taxes Again. Members of the Senate believed they might find the answer in a tax on incomes, which was revived late yes- terday after being voted down in- formally the day before, or in taxes on pin ball machines and mechanical music boxes. The house had nothing before it re- sembling new taxes as it prepared to continue its deliberations as a com- | ecutive session until nearly 1 o’clock this morning before calling a halt until noon today. Both branches have set $5,000,000 as their goals, but the members of neither house have been able to agree within their own ranks upon any combina- tion of levies that will raise more than approximately $4,000,000. The House evolved a program early today that would bring in about $4,- 125,000 with the accepted items in- cluding: Floor tax of 2, cents per gallon on liquor, $500,000. Tax of 75 cents per barrel on beer, $850,000. Cosmetics tax, $2175,000. Levy on admissions, $250,000. Reregistration of automobile drivers, except chauffeurs, $500,000, Tax on consumers of electricity, $550,000. Franchise $400,000. Documentary taxes, $450,000. ‘Taxes on pin ball machines, Reject Real Estate Tax. It rejected a proposal to tax real estate for relief purposes by a vote of 90 to 7, and likewise disapproved a levy upon the gross revenue of newspaper advertising and a graduated traders’ license. Members said White's attack on taxes on corporations, 350,000. Harris Will Send You Straight Through Summer Triumphantly.. The latter step was the first indica- tion that the House would attempt to | shape its own course in the matter of raising relief revenues. Previously it had been content to stand by until the Senate showed its hand. Political observers said today the change in the policy of the House, as- suring the presentation of two dif= ferent programs, might necessitate the organization of a conference commit- tee from the Senate and House, there- by throwing the relief question into an even more complex state than be- fore. The Senate, reversing itself for the second time within as many days, ac- cepted the proposal of Senate Presi- dent Lansdale G. Sasscer of Prince Georges County for a one-half of 1 per cent income tax late yesterday (nnd the bill was to be introduced to- | day. It would raise $1,100,000. Senate's $3,965,000 Program, Acceptance of the levy upon in- comes was again voted in committee rooms, with the Senate meeting as an informal Committee of the Whole.
