By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, April 30.—Sales of Chrysler Corp. increased sharply in the first quarter while net income nearly equaled that of the like 1936 period, despite a prolonged strike, the company reported. Despite smaller earnings of $2.51 a common share, against $2.656 & year ago, directors declared a common dividend of $2 a share. The previous payment, March 13, was $1.50. Sales last quarter totaled $183,207,- 345, compared with $148,463,735 a year ago, while net income was $10,914,303, against $11,453,439. K. G. Keller, president, reported sales to distributors and dealers totaled 283,571 passenger and commercial vehicles, against 239,867 in the first quarter of 1936. Stocks of cars and trucks in dealers hands, he said, both here and abroad, are low and pre- vailing plant and field conditions point to continued good business. Cash and marketable securities at March 31 last totaled $79,875,552, a gain of $18,971,128 during the quarter. Net current assets were $78,521,021, a gain of $13,551,210, while inventories decreased $4,713,629. The latest dividend is payable June 11 to stock of record May 14. In 1936 the company paid total dividends of $12 a share. Washington Produce BUTTER—92 score, I-pound prints. 36; Ye-pound prints. 5, 90 score, 1:pound prints. FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1937. Stock Seat Price Falls to New Low Since December By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 30—New York Stock Exchange seat prices fell to a new low since last December today with the arrangement for transfer of & membership at $100,000, down $6,000 from the previous sale. For most of the year the trend of seat values has been downward. The highest price paid was $134,000 in | January. Freer offering of seats on the decline has been attributed to the stock market's frequent displays of weakness and reduced trading volume. Today's sale was viewed in stock exchange circles as an echo of ‘Wednesday's severe slump, which- was belleved partly due to President Roosevelt’s warning against stock speculation. SAUL CO. 925 15th Street Natl. 2100 FIN BUSINESS FORGES UPWARD INWEEK Mearly All Lines Score Ad- vance—Consumers in Spending Mood. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 30.—Nearly all branches of trade and business have | improved during the week, Dun & | Bradstreet said today in the Weekly | Review. “Consumers were in a spending mood, and on some of the best days retail sales were almosi on a par with the pre-Easter bulge,” the report stated, “Buying in wholesale markets #tarted to widen, with repeat orders of better proportions, while Summer merchandise was sought actively. “Although the rush to place new orders was slackened in some divi- slons, industrial operations were set ahead to work down backlogs as pres- sure for deliveries grew more per- sistent.” The agency estimated retail sales for the country as a whole at 8 to 20 per cent over the 1936 figure, & 2 to 5 per cent above the preceding week. Percentage increases over 1936 in the major geographic regions were: New England, 12 to 18; East, 8 to 20; | Middlewest, 17 to 24; Northwest, 12 to 20; South, 15 to 22; Southwest 12 to 18, and Pacific Coast, 10 to 17. | Flood conditions were blamed hold- | ing the figures down in some districts. | “Resistance to higher prices placed on some items was not generally in | evidence,” the agency said. “Many | consumers. bought ahead in staples, realizing the necessary upward re- | visions in primary markets would not start to reach the retail division until | Fall.” In wholesale markets, the Review said, requests for immediate ship- ments were the largest since the March peak. “It was the acquisition of Summer goods, however, the Re- view said, “and the further covering of Fall needs that were chiefly respon- | sible for bolstering the estimated wholesale volume to 15 to 30 per cent | from 1936 comparative.” CHICAGO PRODUCE.
