Bank clearings in April in the Capital scored another substantial gain and reached the highest point of any April since 1930, according to the monthly report made this noon by George H. Bright, manager of the Washington Clearing House Associa- tion Washington clearings totaled $115,- 715,484.33, in comparison with a total of $100,389,014.14 in April 1936, an ad- vance in the month ending today of $15,326,470.19. Clearings for the first four months of the present year have also scored a remarkable gain over the like period in 1936, standing at $423,242,- 857.29, as compared with $351,759,~ 96458 a year ago. This is a gain of $71,482.894.71, and splendid proof of the business advances made in the Capital so far in 1937 Clearings back in 1930 in April totaled $118,036,652.98, and at .the high mark in April, 1929, reached the sum of $126.836.188.71. In a modest March advance, net earnings of the Chesapeake & Poto- mac Telephone Co. totaled $167,748, in comparison with $165,555 in March, 1936, the monthly report made today to the Public Utilities Commission stated. Operating revenues totaled $944,059, against $886.373 a year ago. Operate ing expenses offset part of this in- crease, standing at $678.041, compared | with $639.044 in the same month a Year ago, leaving net operating reve- nues of $266,018, against $247,329 in March, 1936. ‘Taxes were heavier—$82,284, against $69,623 a year ago. There was a small fncrase in non-operating income, mak- ing total gross income amount to | $185,923, compared with $178646 in March, 1936. Interest deductions called for $18. this year in comparison with $13,091 a year ago. The report filed today also shows | that operating revenues in the first quarter of 1937 totaled $2.760.805, while this ftem stood a year ago at | $2635.351. Operating expenses were | heavier—8$1,947,937, comparing with | $1,851,382 last year. After deduction of operating taxes of $252,186, com- pared with $214,344 last year, net operating income amounted to $560,- 685, while the same figure last year was $569.6: Non-operating income provement, but interest deductions were higher—$55.746, as compared | with $41,988—leaving a net income for the first quarter of 1937 of $512,080, | against $529,036 in the like period in 1936 Washington was served by 217,961 telephone at the end of March, a net gain of 1,046 over the previous month. There was also a notable increase in the number of telephone calls in March and in the three months over the same months last year. Gas Earnings Slightly Lower. ‘The monthly report of the Wash- ington Gas Light Co., fled today with the - Public Utilities Commission, shows operating revenue for the month of March of $768,268 compared with $694.055 for the same month last | year, an increase of $74.213. Operat- ing expenses also increased from $487,769 in March last year to $569.- 857 in March this ye: due to the larger volume of zas produced and the greater number of customers served. The net result of the month's oper- ation after all deductions was a net income of $139.042, a decrease of but $5.152 from March of last year, despite increasea taxes and increased charges | for the retirement of property. The March earnings bring the net income for the first quarter of the current year up to $403,991. ‘The company reports gas sales of 1,117,000,000 cubic feet for March, 1937, compared with 980,000,000 cubic feet last year, an increase of 14 per cent. At the end of the month the company had 145.434 meters in service in the District of Columbia, a gain f 7,516 meters over March last year. First-quarter comparisons show that operating revenues amounted to $2.- 246,504, against $2,325,956 in the like period in 1936, a drop of $79.452. At the same time operating expenses, in- cluding taxes, advanced to $1,609,443 from $1,585.401 a year ago, leaving net revenues from operations of $637,061, against $740,555 a year ago, a de- crease of $103.494. Non-operating revenues were more than $10,000 above last year. Interest for bond requirements and amortiza- tion required $10,000 more than in the first quarter in 1936. This left a net income of $403,991, compared with $507,778 a year ago, a decrease of $103,787 Today’s Trading on Exchange. Mergenthaler Linotype was a bit stronger on the Washington Stock Ex- change today, three 10-share lots selling at 46. Ten more sold at 4574 Capital Transit opened 13 and closed | at 137, Riggs National Bank common ap- peared on the board in a two-share sale at 305. Potomac Electric Power 6!, per cent preferred changed hands | on a very small sale at 1107,. The day’s market closed with a sale of 40 shares of Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty preferred at 5%, un- thanged. Bonds were neglected. Auto Financing on Increase. "The dollar volume of retail financing of new passenger automobiles shows an increase of 7 per cent for the month of March, as compared with March, 1936, and an increase of 63 per cent | compared with March, 1935, accord- Ing to estimates by the Department of Commerce. As compared with Feb- ruary, 1937, there was an increase of almost 67 per cent.
