- \ WALKER ART GIFT AGGEPTANCE SEEN Corcoran Trustees to Act Soon on Unit of 39 Works of Masters. A provisional gift to the Corcoran Art Gallery of 39 paintings by cele- brated masters, disclosed yesterday in the will of Mrs. Mary Emma Grifin Walker, wealthy former resi- dent of this city, will receive formal action of the Gallery’s Board of | Trustees at a meeting within the | next 10 days, it was learned today. Officials said Mrs. Walker long had been a friend of the gallery, but they did not know until the will was filed in District Court yesterday that she | had provided for the gift of the bulk | of her art collection. The bequest was conditioned on ac- ceptance of the gift as a unit. It must be hung as such and be desig- nated as the “Edwin C. and Mary Walker Collection,” within six months of probating of the will May Rearrange Permanent Collection. In advance of action by the trustees, | gallery officials declined to discuss the conditions. Because of the fine quality i of the collection, however, there ap- | peared little doubt that the pictures | would be accepted and hung as | directed. A rearrangement of the | gallery’'s permanent collection prob- | ably will be necessary to provide space. The picture including works by | such masters as Sir Joshua Reynolds, Gainsborough, Renoir, Landseer, Con- gtable, Monet and Romney, hang in Mrs. Walker's former home at 1314 Sixteenth street Detroit Alternative Beneficiary. In the event the Corcoran does not meet the conditions of the will, the pictures are to go to the Detroit Institute of Arts, If the institute does mot accept them within nine months after probate of the will, the collection is to be turned over to the residuary legatee, Mrs. Mary Brewster Cassels of Boston, Mass., a niece. The paintings are part of a collec- | tion started at Detroit by Edward Chandler Walker, president of the old Detroit Museura of Arts from 1907 to 1910. Walker was a son of the late | Hiram Walker, one of the founders of the Walker Distillery in Ontario. An Associated Press dispatch from Detroit quoted W. R. Valentiner, di- rector of the Detroit Institute of Arts, as saying if the Corcoran Gallery fails to accept the paintings the in- stitute would take any steps necessary to obtain the collection Mrs. Walker died in Boston on April 2. She was in her 80s Paul E. Lesh, local attorney, and Mrs. Cassels were named executors. Lesh said it was impossible to de- termine at present the exact value of the estate, but he estimated it would aggregate several hundrd thousand dollars. West was content with the double and opened the four of clubs. After winning with dummy’s ace, declarer played a small diamond, whereupon Mr. Balfe jumped up with his ace and played the king and queen of clubs. On this trick declarer ruffed with the nine and West threw his remaining diamond. Declarer then hopefully led a spade to dummy’s king, but Mr. Balfe won with the ace, cashed his queen and then led another club. Declarer ruffed with the ten, and this time West overruffed and played the jack of spades. Mr. Balfe, of course, was able to overruff dummy and then led a diamond. West ruffed with the eight, the ace of trumps being his third wining trump trick. ‘The 1,100-point penalty that Mr. Balfe chalked up was well deserved and represented as fine a piece of trap bidding and defensive play as we have ADVERTISEMENT.
