Br the Associated Press. The Agriculture Department said yesterday the number of cattle being fed for market in the corn belt at the start of this month was the smallest in many years. The Bureau of Agricultural Eco- nomics said cattle numbers were 33 per cent smaller than on April 1 last year in the 11 corn belt States. largest reduction was in Western corn belt States where the drought caused heaviest damage. The | The bureau said sharp advances in corn, feed grain and other feeds 1n recent weeks had speeded the market- ing of cattle with market supply after July 1 expected to be much smaller than the supply during the first half of this year. BY the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 14.—New steel business has declined the past week, following heavy tonnages ordered in March, Iron Age sald today in the weekly review of the industry. At the same time the trade journal reported “pronounced weakness”’ in steel scrap markets after the recent sensational rise. Production, however, shows no let- down from an estimated 91 per cent of capacity, the publication said, adding that minor declines in output in some districts were offset by increases in others. “While raw material is advancing in price,” the publication stated, “steel scrap, which has had a phenomenal advance, shows pro- nounced weakness in nearly all centers.
