Nature’s Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo borealis). BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. AN you tell our hawk friends ‘ frov: our foes? So many of the hawks that spend their " time killing off pests for us have lost their lives even while they were doing a kindly deed. It is high time we learn to dis- tinguish the one from the other. This friend, the red-tailed hawk, polices Eastern North America from Sas- katchewan, Wiscensin and Illinois east to Central Keewatin and Newfound- land and south to Eastern Texas, Northeastern Mexico, the Gulf Coast of Florida and the Greater Antilles. Children His shrill call of “kee-er-r-r” comes to you from the skies, as he circles high overhead, before making his swift descent upon a slowly trave- | eling mouse, bunny or squirrel. Although this hawk is very well known as far as his looks go, his hunting activities are not so gen- erally advertised. Often this hawk can be seen sitting on a tall treetop. From his vantage point he can see all the little creatures he is 50 fond of and then plan carefully how to reach them with the least effort. The red-tailed hawk is a hand- some fellow of about 32 inches. His | THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14, 1937. spouse is 2 inches longer. Much moss, fern leaves and bits of bark are used for the inner walls. The same nursery is used year after year. It is recondi~ tioned and assumes larger propore tions as time goes on. There are from two or four dull whitish or bluish-white eggs with & variety of markings on them. Some- times the clutch has blotches of sev- eral shades of brown and red and still others of pale lavender-gray. It is not safe to climb up the tree to inspect the eggs or young.
