NEW YORK, April 14.—Improve- ment was seen all along the line in the curb market today as stocks moved up fractions to several points. While most shares held to frac- tional swings, many were well ahead in later trading. Aluminum Co. of America Tose nearly 3 points, as did Bell Telephone of Canada. Driver- Harris was up more than 2 and Sun- shine Mining added nearly 2 points. Gains of a point or more showed for Interstate Hosiery, Carrier Corp., North American Rayon “B,” Newmont and Northern States Power “A." Duke Power lost a point or so and there were small setbacks in Creole Petroleum and Pan-American Airways. Todd Shipyards dropped about 4 points. CHIGAGO GRAIN B the Associated Press. A stimulating factor as the day neared an end was word of high winds and duststorms at many points in Nebraska. NEW YORK, April 14.—First-quar- ter profits of Celanese Corp. of Amer- ica amounted to about $1.10 a share on common stock, against 46 cents A share in first quarter last year, said G. H. Whigham, chairman of the board, at annual stockholders' meet- ing today. “While it is early to discuss sec- ond-quarter possibilities,” the chair- man told shareholders, it is reason- able to estimate, judging by current business, that the earnings for the second quarter will be greater than in the first quarter, provided there is no reversal in general business con- ditions.” The matter of a dividend on the common stock will be taken up at a later meeting of the board Whigham said. It 1s the intent of directors, he added, to consider common divi- dends at regular quarterly periods. Company’s plant is at Cumberland, Md. Nash Kelvinator Corp. Nash Kelvinator Corp. reported com- bined earnings of $709,563 for three months ended February 28, covering the entire period of the Nash Motor division, and January and February for the Kelvinator division. Combined earnings of the two di- visions for same period of previous year, the company stated, would have been $65,731. Collins & Aikman. Collins & Aikman Corp. reported for fiscal year ended February 27 consolidated net income of $4,991,569, equal after preferred dividends to $8.15 a share of common stock. This compared with $3,974,687, or $6.28 a share, in 1935, Crowell Publishing. The Crowell Publishing Co. reported for 1936 earnings, after depreciation, taxes and reserves, amounted to $2,- 923,118, or $3.81 a share on the com- mon stock, after providing for pre- ferred dividends. This compared with earnings equal to $3.12 for 1935. Underwood Elliott. Underwood Elliott Fisher Co., makers of typewriters and account- ing machines, reported for the quar- ter ended March 31, consolidated net income of $1,405432 before surtax on undivided profits, equal to $1.92 a share on 733.084 common shares outstanding. This compares with $828,661, equal after dividends on the 7 per cent preferred stock, since re- deemed, to $1.17 a share on 666,- 448 shares in the corresponding period of 1936. Mathieson Alkali. Net income of Mathieson Alkali Works for the quarter ended March | 31 was reported at 477,051, after charges, depletion and taxes, equal, | after preferred dividend requirements, to 52 cents & share on the common | This compares with $289,692, or 30 cents a share in the March, | 1936, quarter. Western Union. Western Union Telegraph Co. March quarter net income ran about $412.000 ahead of same period last year, R. B. White, president, told stockhoiders at the annual meeting to- day. Girdler, chairman and presi- dent of Republic Steel Corp., told stockholders at the annual meeting today, “We are getting very much closer to the time when we will be able to say something to common | stockholders.” | Similar comments have been made | recently by Myron C. Taylor, chair- man of United States Steel Corp., | and Eugene G. Grace, president of Bethlenem Steel Corp., whose com- mon stockholders also asked when payments would be made on the com- mon. Consumption Record Is Established During March, BY the Associated Press The Census Bureau reported today the domestic cotton industry estab- lished an all-time consumption peak In March by using 779,302 bales of lint, ‘The previous high month was June, 1933, with 697,261 bales consumed. Domestic cotton consumption this season will establish a 12-month rece ord, officials said, if recent high ac- tivity is maintained The Bureau of Foreign and Domes~ tic Commerce reported raw cotton ex- ports in March were valued at $33,- 356,000, compared with $33,509,000 in Pebruary this year and $25,883,000 in March, last year. Exports for the first eight months of the season were valued at $296.- 450,000, compared with $308,627,000 Last season there was a decline of 425,000 bales or 9 per cent in quan- tity and a decline of $13,177,000 or 4 per cent in value. Larger cotton exports were recorded for Japan, France, Canada, the Neth- erlands and Sweden this season. Ship- ments were smaller to the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Poland and Belgium. The Census Bureau announced that cotton consumed during March totaled 779,302 bales of lint and 74,321 of linters, compared with 664,439 and 63,643 during February this year and 550,641 and 61,120 during March last year. Cotton on hand March 31 was re- ported held as follows: In consuming establishments, 2,079,« 862 bales of lint and 297,598 of lin- ters, compared with 2,056,144 and 286.865 on February 28 this year and 1.336,529 and 256,777 on March 31 last year, In public storage and at compresses, 5,036,962 bales of lint and 72,363 of linters, compared with 5,065,789 and 78,933 on February 28 this year and 6,570,222 and 65,447 on March 31 last year.
