A—12 %% BANK LOANS GROW IN FIFTH DISTRIGT Richmond Survey Reveals Advance of $27,626,000 in 12-Month Period. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Details from |the December review ©of the Federal Reserve Bank of Rich- mond, received here, disclose that between December 11, 1935, and the corresponding date in the year just ended, December 9, total loans and discounts at the 41 reporting member banks in the fAfth district rose by $27.626,000, of which $23,444,000 was in “all other logns,” which are largely commercial or industrial in charac- ter. Nearly 90 per cent of the in- crease in “all pther loans” occurred in the last four months. During the year investments in se- curities rose by $35,713,000, and the reporting banks added $18,943.000 to their reserve deposits at the Federal Reserve Bank. Cash in vaults shows a rise of $1.257,000 between the mid- dle of December, 1935, and December, 1936. Deposits in the 41 banks rose $72,793,000 during the year, of which $70.115,000 represented demand de- posits and only $2,678.000 time de- posits. Time deposits in 41 reporting mem- ber banks and aggregate deposits in 10 mutual savings banks totaled $404.- 607,375 at the end of November, 1936, 8 lower figure than $408,847.824 re- ported at the end of October, but above $393,097841 on November 30, 1935. Both member and savings banks reported drops in time and gavings deposits during the last month, but both classes of banks showed higher deposits than a year earlier. A moderate decline in time and savings deposits usually occurs around the first of December, when Christmas clubs are paid and many depositors withdraw funds for holiday buying. Building inspectors in 31 fifth dis- trict cities issued 2,853 permits in November, conipared with 2,142 per- mits issued in November, 1935, a gain of 33 per cent. Estimated valuation figures last mqnth totaled $6.913844, an increase of 31 per cent above the total of $5.267,569 reported for No- vember, 1935, and 129 per cent above $3.014,411 rerorted for November, 1934. Twentyuhrec of the 31 cities reported higher valuation figures for the 1936 month and 11 largest cities in the fifth district were included in the 23. Contracts adtually awarded in No- vember for copstruction work in thre fifth district, J:;ludm; both rural and urban projects. totaled $20.890.500, compared with $16.417.226 awarded in November,| 1935, and $3.599,431 awarded in 194, the survey discloses. Riggs Deposits $100,805,799. Robert V. Fleming, president of the Riggs National Bank, and the other | officers received many congratulations today on th¢ bank's crossing the | $100,000,000 mjark in deposits for the | first time sinpe the institution was founded. Th¢ statement of Decem- ber 31, 1936, shows total deposits of $100,805,799.28, Total deposi| date of the c $89.100,762.36, on June 30, 1936, the troller's last call, were | which means a gain in the last sx months of $11,705.- 036.93. a very substantial improve- ment. For sgveral years Riggs Na- tional has bden listed among the‘ largest banks|in the United States. Crossing the | $100,000,000 line will place the ashington institution much farther| up the list. Many other|local banks will report | notable gains fin their deposits in the | past six months when the next con- troller's call ij issued in a few days. The 22 banks|are expected to reveal | an all-time high record. Insurance Leader Retires. After 20 years as general agent of the Northwestern Life Insurance Co., A.L. | Baldwin retired on December 31 and | will be succeeded by his son, Roger L. Baldwin. | Mr. Baldwin, sr., will remain as a special agent. He was special guest Saturday night at a dinner at the Dodge Hotel in honor of his long an able service, George F. Clendaniel acting as toastmaster. In 1916 the Washington office wrote $800,000 in new insurance. It has since risen fo $3,500,000 annually. Twenty years| ago the office ranked sixty-seventh pmong the agencies. In 1936 it won second place in a Nation- | wide contest for new business. | The retiring general agent has the unique distinction of having had as- sociated with him in business his en= tire family of four sons and one daugh- ter. Roger L/ Baldwin, who succeeds him as the head of the agency, is 37 years old, grafuate of Alleghany Col- lege, former |cashier of the agency here and has been active in the busi- ness since 1922, having produced more than $3,000,000 in new policies. Joins Brown Harriman & Co. Sidney T. Thomas has become asso- ciated with B\Iown Harriman & Co. in the Washinglon office, it was an- nounced today. For several years Mr. Thomas has been vice president of Robert C. Johes & Co., another in- vestment firm. Brown Harriman & Co. also annolinced the opening of an office in Atlanta today. Belief that before many years have passed investment houses will be grateful for securities legislation and that the business of the stock broker 1s not doomed to desuetude, is ex- pressed by E. A. Pierce, head of E. A. Pierce & Co., in a year-end message sent to all offies today. Group insurance in 1936 reached the highest peak |n its history, according to a statement today by Thomas I Parkinson, president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, which [naugurated this plan of protection for| employes 25 years ago. More employes are now protected by the various group coverages and for a greater volump of insurance than ever before, it was stated. Exnicios Joins Exchange. Marshall O. Exnicios, vice presi- dent of Robeft C. Jones & Co., was elected a merpber of the Washington Stock Exchange by the Board of Gov- ernors today.| He thus becomes the first new member in 1937. A native of Washington, he received his early education here and graduated from Dartmouth Callege in 1921. While at Dartmouth he took special courses in the Amos Tuck School of Business and 193 High 858 21Y% 55% 3 T0% 141 137% 178 60 8% 120% 16% 35% 82 8% 98, 50% 37h 63n 1003 -. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Ascociatea Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, January 4.—Stocks | generally were on the down grade in today's market, with automotive and | steel issues leading the slide. Wall Street showed concern over the threatened labor tie-up of Gen- eral Motors’ plants throughout the country and speculative forces stepped carefully. Trading was slow during the greater part of the session, however, and early declines of fractions to 3 points | or more were substantially reduced near the final hour. Steels stiffened in the afternoon when the American Iron & Steel In- stitute estimated current mill opera- | tions at 79.4 per cent of capacity, up 24 points from the preceding week at a record since March, 1930. Transfers were around 1,700,000 shares. % | | 5314 o | weight; NEW YORK COTTON By the Associated Press.
