INQUIRY LAUNCHE % [N DEATH OF CON Physician Refuses to Issue Certificate—Brain In- jury Disclosed. Coroner A. Magruder MacDonald and the police homicide squad today were investigating the death in Gar- field Hospital yesterday of Whitman P. Conn, 36-year-old contractors’ trade journal editor, after his private phy- sician refused to issue a death certifi- cate. Conn was stricken in his Munsey Building office, December 18, where, several weeks before, he had struck his head on an open flling cabinet, according to his mother, Mrs. May P. Rosendall. Later that day, Conn went to his mother’s home for her birthday celebration and was stricken a second time. An autopsy shortly after his death showed a brain injury, Coroner Mac- Donald said, which will necessitate several days’ microscopic study to de- termine its exact nature. Detective Clyde Strange was investi- gating a report the brain ailment was brought about when Conn was struck on the head while boxing w\th(l friend. Conn'’s mother said she knew noth- ing of this, but that her son had com- plained to her and his wife for several weeks after telling them he had struck his head on an office cabinet. He re- fused to call a physician until stricken at his office, according to Mrs. Rosen- dall. After 'swearing in a coroner's jury yesterday in case an inquest is decided necessary, Conn's body was released to the Hines Undertaking Parlors, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Congres- sional Cemetery. | Conn, a native of Washington and graduate of Central High School, was editor of “The Constructor.” He had been engaged in newspaper work for more than 10 years, begin- ning under the late John Boyle of the Wall Street Jowrnal. Later he was connected with the Washington bureau of the New York Journal of Com- merce and the Washington Post. Seven years ago he became a public relations officer for the Associated General Contractors of America, which had headquarters here. Two years ago he was made editor of the association’s monthly journal. Besides his mother, he is survived | by his widow, Mrs. Catherine Brown Conn; a daughter, Marjorie Ada May Conn, and a brother.
