Bedtime Stories Peter Makes a Promise. BY THORNTON u! BURGESS. slow to promise un! you do. ETER RABBIT and old Mr. Toad had just met in Farmer Brown's cabbage patch and Peter had made what seemed to Old Mr. Toad to be a silly remark. Peter is, as you know, very fond of cabbage, and it was this fondness for cabbage that had brought him over there. He had asked Old Mr. Toad 1f he had come for cabbage, 0. “Had you stopped to think you wouldn’t have asked such s silly ques- tion,” said Old Mr. Toad. “You know very well that I don't eat cabbage. “I'M THINKING ABOUT RETURN- ING,” SAID HE. You know very well that I am not a vegetarian. I am not interested in cabbages unless they happen to have some worms on them. You can have your cabbage, but I'll take a cabbage worm instead.” Deter turned up his nose at that. “Well, if you are not interested in cabbages, what are you down here for, when there are no cabbage worms at this time of the year?” asked Peter. ©Old Mr. Toad solemnly blinked his Philipsborn in } Swagger or Fitted PERFECTION SEAL-DYED CONEY Sictdime Look for this Label , Trade-Mark Reg. golden eyes as he looked up at Peter. “I'm thinking about retiring,” said he. “What do you mean by that?” de- manded Peter. “What do you mean by retiring?” “Going to bed,” replied Old Mr. ‘Toad briefly. “But you didn’t have to come 'way down hete to g0 to bed!” exclaimed Peter. “No,” replied Old Mr. Toad. “No.I didn’t have“to, ‘but it struck me that this would be a good place. It struck me that it would be fairly handy to the Smiling Pool when I wake up next Spring.” It was Peter’s turn to blink and he did blink. “Do you mean,” he cried, “that you are planning to go to bed for thé Winter?” “Certainly,” replied Old Mr. Tvad. “Of" course, that is what I meant. ‘What did you think I meant?” “Why, ‘I thought you meant that you were simply looking for a place to take a nap,” replied Peter, as if he felt a little bit foolish. “You don't mean to tell me that you are going to bed now?” “As soon as I can find a satisfac- tory place,” replied Old Mr. Toad. “But it isn't cold weather yet,” pro- tested Peter. Old Mr. Toad humped up his shoulders. “It’s cold enough for me,” said he. “But this is one of the f:nest parls of all the year!” cried Peter. “Just think of all you will miss.” “Hugh!” said Old Mr. Toad. “I'll miss nothing that I don't want to miss. What any one wants to stay awake for after cold weather begins is something I just cannot under- stand. No, sir, I cannot understand it. Now that Summer is over, I am ready to retire.” “Just where are you going to re- tire?” inquired Peter, trying to sp- te. > sald Old Mr. Toad, “is Charges Billed featured exclusively at Wiashington Women's and Misses' Sizes Just-read these features . . . ® A Perfection Seal-dyed Coney garment is designed to give the Perfect Silhouette for every age. t is our answer to the problem of every woman: “Can |.wear a fur coat and look slender?”* These coats.are made of selected prime. pelts which are’ especially processed to make them soft and lustrous. & .« . .
