By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 27.—After hesitant action at the start, the bond market moved toward recovery today as traders entered bids for many is- sues which fell sharply on Monday. Supporting orders in the more volatile rail and industrial liens were | brought out by the early rallying tendencies in the stock market, just as the selling of bonds was swelled | yesterday by the break in equities. United States Governments con- | tinued to move quietly in a small range. A few Treasuries edged up slightly, while others receded 1,32 to 3/32 of a point. Foreign obligations also showed narrow swings. The early rebounds ranged from | fractions to 3 points in Youngstown Sheet & Tube 3!2s, Studebaker 6s, American Rolling Mill 4's, St. Paul 5s and a few more which yesterday | gave up from 1 to 7 points. A small decline was registered by the weekly wholesale commodity price index compiled by the National Fer- tilizer Association in the week ended October 24. Based on the 1926-1928 average as 100, this index last week was 79.9, compared with 80.1 in the preceding week, 80 a month ago and 78 a year 8go. The highest point reached by the index this year was 80.5, in the week of September 9, and the lowest was 75.1, in the week of May 16. The two most heavily weighted group indexes, foods and farm prod- ucts, declined durin gthe week to the lowest porits reached in the past two months. Farm product prices were generally lower with the cotton, grain and live stock indexes, all declining, and with 11 items in the entire group moving lower, against 3 advances. Declines and advances ip the food group were balanced, but lower quota~ tions for several heavily weighted items resulted in the drop in the food index. Declining prices for Southern pine and linseed ofl were responsible for the recession of the building material in- dex. The only other group index to % | move lower during the week was that of fertilizer materials, reflecting the decline in the price of cottonseed meal. Higher quotations for cotton goods | and raw silk more than offset the de- | cline in cotton, with the result that a small rise was recorded by the textile index. hington Produce BUTTER—Range of prices to stores gathered {rom wholesale dealers (prices to nNearby shippers based on Philadeloh w York prices): One-pound print ore). 1-pound prini (90 score 54 {2bound prints, cAFton (83 pound prints, carton (90 ore). 34; tubs (90 s of weakness ap- 1%a [of capital stock, against $480.692 in LXVI "STOLK —Pigs. & : mediums, 9l roughs, 6as: ci Prices paid shippers, net fob. NEW YORK, Octobsr 27.—Wall Street turned an attentive ear toward the quarterly directors’ meeting of the United States Steel Corp., sched- uled late today, in expectation of ime portant news. The steel industry’s busy Summer led many to look for more than the usual announcement of quarterly earnings and routine dividend action. Statisticians have figured recent operations of the industry should have enabled the industry’s leading unit to make & neat profit in the three months ended with September. Discussion focused, however, on prospects for preferred shareholders, There is an accumulation of $65,000,- 000 in unpaid dividends on the senior stock, equal to $18.25 a share. Last July the board boosted the quarterly payment on the stock to $1 from 50 cents, but failed to restore the regular $1.75 rate abandoned dur- ing the depression. There have been suggestions in financial circles the corporation might follow recent action by a member of other companies in capitalizing divi- dend arrears through a new security issue. Attempts to dope out dividend prospects were complicated by the knowledge that the Federal surtax upon undivided profits may influence action. Recent demand of steel workers for a wage increase heightened interest in the outcome of the meeting. MONTREAL SILVER. MONTREAL. October 27 (. —Bilver futures opened sieads. unchanged.
