*LIBERAL HOSTILITY HIT BY CAMERON Ford Motor Official Says Form That Flouts 01d Principles Is False. By the Assoclated Press. DETROIT, October 19 —Willian: J. Cameron told a radio audience last night that “any form of liberalism that flouts old principles is false.” Addressing weekly broadcast to “lib- eral youth,” the Ford Motor Co. official said “a liberalism that frightens and unsettles, a liberalism that sets the Nation ablaze with hatred or suspicion, that sets country against city, employe against employer, youth against age, is false in its source and in its inten- tion. A “true liberal,” Cameron said, “rec- ognizes the basic liberalism inseperable from American foundations and insti- tutions.” “Principles that produce the free ballot, free enterprise, social access to social good, free speech and a free press, cannot be called old or new— they are eternal,” he added. “The world was not made last Sat- urday night; its revolving motion cannot be reversed by statute tomor- row. It is the same old world, with the same old laws, the same old, wise compulsions, the same old salutary penalties. It grows better with every gain in knowledge, new knowledge that in any fleld is the fruit of old prin- ciples.” Nature’s Children BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. ERE is a beautiful American cat that looks something like a cross hetween a weasel and a couger. Its range includes the southern part of Texas and south- ward to Paraguay, qast of the Andes Mountains. ‘When you catch your first glimpse of the little cat, you may mistake it for an otter. It is closely related to the eyra, also found on the Mexican dorder, As these creatures prefer to live in B acy the densest thickets and underbrush, even if you lived in Texas and were much in the outdoors, getting ac- quainted with the wildfolks, this cat would be sound asleep during the day- time or be peering from some cleverly selected hideout, sizing you up. The jaguarundi is somewhat smaller than the ocelot and very much slighter in build. The tail is the length of the body. The general coat | color is grizzled brownish-gray, and blends in perfectly with the foliage end shrubs where this cat does its punting. The mice, rats, birds and rabbits DAILY SHORT STOR PERFECT SMILE By Ned Woodman. [A S JUNE GREG- ORY, turning hospitalward after B brief hour of opping, boarded » crowded south= bound car, a hand- pome young man Jooked up from his newspaper and pmilingly offered her his seat. She would have gnown he was handsome even if he had not smiled. *Tall, broad-shoul- ~ ered, fine-featured exquisitely groomed and well tailored. The smile added only the finishing touch as it dis- glosed his strong, even, sparkling feeth. ‘With an answer- gng smile and a poftly murmured “thank you,” she seated herself, dropping two of her pundles, one of which—a rather hard and heavy one—fell with a mighty !hump upon the handsome stranger's L4 He picked up her property and gestored it to her, but the smile which accompanied the act was marred by a slight grimace of pain. “I beg your pardon. Thank you s0 much,” she said, and he smiled again. Then folding his paper so as to read it comfortably with one hand he politely returned his atten- tion to its columns, as if the inci- dent were closed, and clung to a strap. June hoped that he had paid as much attention to her smile as she had to his. She was proud of her own teeth and glad of every oppor- tunity of flashing them upon others, thus gaining the popularity which naturally accrues to the poasessor of & sunny disposition. * x ¥ X PBR.FECI‘ teeth were almost an obsession; defective ones a positive affront. Mentally she appraisji those of this model of perfectifn as “A double-plus.” She was glad she was in uniform. $er blue and white stripes and her gray coat and veil were even more becoming to her than to most nurses, and besides she had scarcely anything but her uniforms in which she cared o be seen. As she reached her corner, two blocks' from the hospital, she arose and alighted from the car. Perhaps it was not entirely by accident that she brushed against his arm, drew his attention for an instant from his nzvl‘papex and again exchanged smiles 4 Sith b Oh, those teeth! —llke a string of pearls to me—" she cought herself humming “The Rosary” with new significance as she hurried back to her work. Her duties were comparatively light during the next two weeks; most of her patlents were convalescents. She smiled as usual, but many of the answereing smiles revealed so much dental imperfection as to cause her to feel that her own expression was degenerating into & scornful grin, In her dreams by night and day she saw - strong, even, sparkling teeth surround- ed by an aura of masculine pgrlecwm and gentleness. * ok ¥ % GRIGOR with her ” said the head nurse “there an emer- gy ‘x:endectomy in 27 and Im¥ street. Madden, and Bob Unrue, son of at the Dent School. have little peace of mind when this creature moves in among them. No matter where these victims try to hide, their foe can slenderize itself to accommodate the quarters to which the hunted creature has rushed for safety, One of the ways to catch these cats is to hunt for them at night. They climb trees, and you can take a lan- tern and “shine their eyes.” They will also enter traps, for they are guileless and also greedy. They do not confine themselves entirely to night hunting, and may be seen abroad sleeking through the underbrush of catsclaw and granjeno. There have been some very handsome ones cap- tured and placed in zoological parks, but the cats look so much like familiar animals that they are not studied as a rarely seen creature. There must be two sets of children, as the young can be seen in March as well as in August. They are dainty little things and seem to be fearless as they go to some spring for a re- freshing drink of water. If they hear | a sound they are very swift in making a retreat. Though they are like little kittens in many ways, it is almost impossible to tame them. They for- get all the pampering and loving you bestow upon them if temptation comes | along and there are little rabbits, mice | or birds nearby. They can hunt unharmed among the most fearful thorns of the mes- quite, cactus and chaparral and never seem to be troubled by this almost impassable intrenchment. Here is a grand chance for a young naturalist. Practically nothing is known of their love songs, family life and social affairs. Iv is claimed “She brushed against his arm.” that this cat is a very clever fisher- going to put you on special. Dr. Ames operates at 8. There, 27 is ringing now. Bet- ter get busy.” June tripped to room 27. She pre- ferred not to have woman patients for her special cases, as a rule, and she fervently hoped 27 might be a man. As she opened the door of room 27 she discovered that it was a man. His face was turned away from her and he was groaning— although she learned, upon reading his record sheet, that he had been given & hypo less than an hour before. “Did you ring?” she asked. He turned his head. It was not merely | & a man . . . it was “the” man. He evidently recognized her, for he smiled in spite of his pain. Those peerless teeth again! * ok ok X SHE noted that it was much like the smile he gave her when she dropped that heavy thing on his foot. In fact, it seemed as if it were that identical smile. The intervening days melted away like a fog in its soft warmth and she felt as if she were to blame for his present pain. “Oh, 'm sorry I dropped that parcel on your foot!” she exclaimed. “It must have hurt dreadfully!” She blushed as she realized that this apol- ogy was hardly a part of. her pro- fessional duty. “What's a mere corn compared to an appendix?” he retorted. His ques- tion would have sounded rude if it had not been softened by his smile, faint though it was. No, he couldn’t have a drink of water. He was prepared for his op- eration and must go to the table with an empty stomach. “Well, I suppose that's the ideal way to go to the table,” he admitted. Again that painful smile. “Please let me have your rings, if any, for safekeeping,” she demanded dutifully. Of course she had not noticed before that he wore a dia- mond ring. * X X X HAT attention could a mere dia- mond hope for in competition with those sparkling teeth? As he drew it from his finger and handed it to her she felt that blush re- turning to her cheeks. They burned the more furiously when she thought |£O; of her next duty, but merely as a matter of form she uttered the ‘words: ‘Any false teeth?” She laughed and turned toward the door even as she spoke, half-consciously in- tending to try that ring on her VA own finger on her way to the office | a, safe. She heard 8 gulp and a click be- hind. her, and then a somewhat muf- fled voice: “Here, aren’t you golng to take care of these?” shencedhhnmlnu.wlml flabby, vacant smile he extended a palm upon which rested, like pearl- studded horseshoes, two rows of strong, even, sparkling teeth. - (Copyright, 1936.)
