NEW YORK, October 19.—Most stocks in the Curb market moved higher today with normally less active shares making fairly wide swings. Thew Shovel was up about 2 points in the last hour as were Ainsworth and American Meter, while major fractions to 1 were added by Apex Electric, Jones & Laughlin Stecl and American Potash & Chemical. Pan-American Airways, selling ex- dividend, advanced more than half point. Montgomery Ward “A” and Newmont Mining also were substantial gainers. NEW YORK, October 10.—E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. in a prelim- inary report today for the quarter ended September 30 showed net income equal to $2.04 a common share in cluding dividends from General Motors investment equal to $109 a share on du Pont common. This compares with $2.06 a share, including $1.11 from General Motors, in the preceding quarter and $1.48, including 68 cents from General Motors in the third period of 1935. For the nine months ended Septem- ber 30 earnings totaled $5.31, of which $2.65 was from the motors investment, compared with $3.22, including $1.13 from General Motors, a year ago.* Atlantic Refining. The Atlantic Refining Co. reported net income for the first nine months of 1936, before surtax on undistributed profits, of $6,161,200, equal to $2.20 a share of common stock, compared with $1,880,500, or 71 cents a share, in the like period of 1935. The company has headquarters in Philadelphia and refineries at Phila- delphia, Pittsburgh and Franklin, Pa., Brunswick, Ga., and Atreco, Tex. MecGraw-Hill Co. McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. today | Shenandoah Corp. | reported third quarter earnings of | $343,343, equal to 57 cents a share on | the common, compared with $251,325, or 42 cents a share, in the same pe- riod last year. Net income for nine months ended September 30 was | $745,268, equal to §1.24 a share, against $525,296, or 83 cents a share, in the first nine months of 1935. James H. McGraw, chairman, said he was confident the substantial in- crease in earnings would permit re-| sumption of dividends on the capital | stock soon, perhaps early next year. Advertising Gains. “Advertising, in our experience,” he | said, “follows from six months to a year the improvement in the capital| goods industries. Our advertising vol- ume in the 23 McGraw-Hill publica- tions for the first nine months of 1936 has increased 25 per cent over 1935, reflecting the general improve- ment.
