N.B.C. OBSERVING TOTHANNIVERSARY 24-Hour Birthday Broadcast Planned by Chain No- vember 14. ENTH anniversaries in enter- tainment radio haven't been 50 numerous as to become too commonplace. Stil! there have been quite a few, both by stations and talent, When it comes to network broad- | cast, the story’s different. There is | only one, and it is taking place right now. The celebrant is the National Broadcasting Co., now finishing its first decade of station hook-ups for e distribution of talent in sound. In that 10 years many things have happened. This first chain started | with 19 stations divided into two groups. Today the number has reached 101. | competition. Now there is a rival coast-to-coast network, C. B. S.; an= other, M. B. S, planning to extend to the coast, and many regional chains. Other statistics show N. B. C. start- ed with a total station power of 40,- 000 watts. Today the wattage sum is 2,000,000 or thereabouts. The first network headquarters in New York had four studios. In 1927 a new building gave it 12. Then 1933 came along with Radio City and its 24 studios. There are other studios in Chicago, San Francisco and Holly- wood. Improvement in engineering and studio to¢chnique has grown apace with other developments. Back in 1926, it was thought a real feat to put on entertainment from Chicago for the inaugural broadcast. That was the voice of Mary Garden. Will Rogers was on that program, too, talking from Independence, Kans., as were Weber and Fields and others. 24-Hour Breadcast Planned. Now the engineers bring in Europe with a snap. They go aboard trains, ships, airplanes, into mines, subma- | rines and numerous other ordinarily lnaccessxbls places for their programs. A big birthday broadcast will call attention to these accomplishments. THE EVENING STAR, WA the night of November 14, running all night and keeping up until the next night. A NEW weskly musical séries, to be identified as “The Story of the song ” will make its debut on Colum- bia Thursday. The programs will fea- ture outstanding concert artists in recitals of vocal masterpieces. ENza- beth Wysor, contralto, will take part in the initial broadcast. N B. C.'s Washington staff has challenged the local Columbia force to a handball game in lieu of the annual golf match. In anticipa- tion of the challenge, N. B. C. has selected its team with Vincent F. Cal- 1ahan as coach . .. Bud Barry, former Boston athlete has started a seties of daily sports broadcasts on WRC at 5:10 p.m. . . . Melody Matinee, one of Radio’s oldest sponsored programs, will return to N. B. C. November 15. LR SR G Chicago Gets Skating Exhibit.
