_IHE EVENING STAR, WASHINGION. D._C, MONDAY, OOTOPER 1o W6 misAvelsl: STOCKS IRREGULAR IBA[}[]NV[NII[]N TRANSACTIONS ON THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE » CALL 1S ISSUED D. C. Investment Dealers Receive Announcement g From Orrin G. Wood. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Investment dealers in Washington who are members of the Investment Bankers’ Association have just re- ceived the official call from President Orrin G. Wood for the 1936 con- vention, which will be held at Augusta, Ga., De- cember 2 to 6. It will be the asso- ciation’s 25th an- niversary, which is a signal for an especially varied and busy pro- gram. There will five forums, one on each day of the meeting, President Wood states, and leaders in the economic life of the country will appear on the program daily, speaking on subjects pertinent to the bond investment busi- ness. Committees and the board of governors will also consider problems particularly vital to investment bankers Member investment firms in Wash- ington are being urged to send as many representatives as possible. The Nominating Committee has alrcady completed and reported on the official slate for the coming year, which in- cludes Edward B. Hall of Harris, Hall | | go, as the committee’s | ident in 19 , well known among | investment men here, is expected to | remain as executive vice president. The Board of Governors will include | Claude W. Wilhide of Baker, Watts & Co., Baltimore. W. E. Booker of this city is among the present Board of | Governors, as well as being retiring chairman of the association’s South- eastern group. Perley Shown Paris Bourse. Frank M. Perley, trust investment officer of the American Security & Trust Co., back from a trip to Europe, visited the Paris Bourse just a few hours before the I : devaluation of the French franc was announced. A Paris cor- respondent of the | trust company | took him onto the floor of the | exchange | they were prc:enl when the hints of the de-| valuation move | reached the money market. e Orrin G. Wood Excitement on the Bourse nat-| wrally ran very high and was ex- | tremely interesting to visitors. The next day the Bourse was closed, re- maining so until alarm over devalua- tion had passed. Mr. Perley also visited the London | exchange, which he also found highly | interesting. In order to go onto the floor of the London exchange, he had | to wear a tall silk hat. A London| friend borrowed the proper regalia | for him and he got in by the “high hat” method. He also looked in on | the exchanges in Brussels and| Amsterdam, but not under quite such | unusual circumstances. Directors Advance Walden, Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond have appointed | John S. Walden, jr., to the office of | first vice president of the bank for the period ending February 28, 141, approval having been granted by the governors of the Federal Reserve| System, Chairman Frederic A. Delano | announced today. He was formerly vice president. President De Emmett Bradshaw of | the Woodmen of the World Life In- | surance Co., which has an office at | [7701 Georgia avenue, announces that | new business this year is sure to break | all records. The usual yearly quota | was written in the first six months, he | says. President Bradshaw added that the Board of Directors is now consider- ing a proposal to issue loans on real estate through the Federal Housing Administration. $1,019,060 Land Bonds Called. The Virginia-Carolina Joint Stock Tand Bank of Norfolk, Va., has an- nounced the calling of a total of $1,- 019,060 of 5 per cent bonds due 1942, 1953 and 1956. The bonds are re- deemable at par on presentation at the Chase National Bank on or after No- vember 1, 1926. Simultaneously with this announce- ment, Webster, Kennedy & Co., Inc., and G. M.-P. Murphy & Co, are offer- ing $1,000,000 of 3 per cent bonds of the institution, due November 1, 1941, optional 1938, at 100. This refinanc- ing, together with that in August, re- sults in a net saving to the bank of $32,750 a year in interest charges. Market Interest Holds Up. Interest in the New York stock tnarket remains at a high pitch, judg- ing by the attendance in the local brokerage offices. Monday morning found traders and investors eager for the starting of the translux. They ‘witnessed an unusually good opening, with trading very lively and prices higher in many issues. Brokers report that there has been 8 large amount of foreign buying in the American markets during the past few days. They consider this and continued good business reports as the main reasons for the strength in the ‘Wall Street quotations. It was reported in the financial dis- trict today that the Securities Ex- change Commission will take no part in the move started by some New York Exchange members to extend trading hours from 3 to 4 pm. It is up to the exchange to regulate its own hours, 8. E. C. officials say. It is doubted if the six-hour session plan will be adopted. New Peaks on Exchange Here. Mergenthaler Linotype reached an- other new high mark on the Wash- ington Stock Exchange today when 25 shares sold at 543;. Washington Gas 5s, 1960, also hit a new 1936 peak at 125, up half a point from the last previous sale. Anacostia & Potomac R. R. 5s sold at 76 and 75%, 50 shares of Riggs National Bank preferred came out at 102 and Potomac Electric Power 5% per cent preferred changed hands at 11215, Indications point to a continuation of the upward trend of the business cycle, irrespective of the results of next month’s election, says the United Business Service in its current report. Except in areas which have been af- fected severely by this year’s drought, business will continue to show sharp gains over 1935 res: during the fourth quarter. F. M. Perley Prev.
